Re: Struggling to get a job
In addition to the location issue (which agreed is the primary problem), what PM training do you have? Many good PM roles in Canada seem to want PMP or see it as highly desirable. In my experience, most UK PMs have alternative qualifications (APMP or Prince2). If you haven’t already, it might be worth getting PMP on your resume as Canadian firms are unlikely to have heard about others. if you already have an alternative qualification, there will likely be a lot of crossover and getting your PMP shouldn’t be that difficult. Just to clarify, this advice is only likely to enhance your chances once within Canada. . |

I will also reiterate what others have said on here, don’t mention the UK at all…..as they will take one look at the address and phone number and in the garbage your resume goes. You more than likely need to be in Canada for interviews….not all will be willing to do skype interviews….especially if your Canadian address is near to where the job is located they will ask you to come in.
Once you get here….its still going to be tough, it doesn’t work like the UK, its more who you know here, not what you know, but if your persistent and determined it will pay off eventually, its just tough, anyone who is trying to break into the job market here has my empathy, that said every occupation is different too. |

When I hire (US), I don't usually bother interviewing anyone further away than neighboring states/ 200 miles (whichever is less) - in other words I won't even bother with applications from the far end of the state I work in. |

Re: Struggling to get a job
Regarding the UK address/phone number - just think about the uncertainty from the employer - they have no idea where you will move to eventually, how long it will take for you to immigrate here (or if you even will be able to immigrate), how long it will take for you to come over for an interview, etc.
Where as if you're in the country, living at a nearby address and local phone number, they know that you can respond quickly, easily come in person for an interview without it being an ordeal, etc. |

Agree with everything said above you really need to be in Canada and also technically with an IEC you do not have a work permit until you actually land in Canada and present yourself to CBSA with the requisite 2 years insurance and proof of funds. Be prepared also that having an IEC work permit which being temporary can be seen as a limiting factor by some companies plus of course there are some who will put lack of Canadian experience in the way. |

Yes! You don't have a work permit just because you have an LOI - so if asked prior to arriving in Canada to validate the LOI, you can't say you are legally able to work. My son experienced exactly that, lol, they presumed he was on an IEC 2 year working holiday when he was permanent resident! He lost out on a promotion because of it.. they assumed he wouldn't be staying. As an aside, I was asked to help one person who was on an IEC and who's employer didn't understand it was a valid work permit and who retained all wages earned as they 'weren't working legally' in their opinion - after being directed to some links to the appropriate rules / legislation, the employer paid him in full. :) |

you can get a job in Canada whilst still in the UK..I managed to do it..the caveat being i was already PR and had lived in Canada for 4 years previously..i did a skype interview..then off my own bat to speed the process decided to fly back to Canada for a week to meet them face 2 face..based on that they offered me job there and then..i think because it shows you are serious and committed.
IF your trade or profession is in demand that can make a big difference, you may even get headhunted - but for most of those trying to obtain a job while living overseas it's almost impossible.. it can also prove difficult even if you are living here! ;) |
