Statement of Special Educational Needs in Canada?
 

Don't know if anybody can help. Our 9 year old daughter has diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD and Tourettes and struggles terribly in mainstream school. Currently applying for a Statement of Special Educational Needs in the UK and school are positive she will get it. However, in a few years, we are hoping to return to Canada (lived there when daughter was baby) and don't know what the situation would be there. Do they have a similar system for children with special needs as in UK? Does anyone know if there is much support in Ontario for autistic kids? We will be returning to Huntsville, Ontario, but would be willing to move! Any advice/comments greatly appreciated. Thank you!:)

Have a hunt for posts by dbd33 on the subject of autism (use advanced search, put his name in and 'autism' in the search term box). He's shared his experiences of autism care in Ontario (or lack of it) on the forum.

Are you all Canadian citizens? Just that your daughter passing a medical for a PR application could be rather tricky if not.

Understand though that I start from a position some see as defeatist. I don't think there's anything to be done to make autistic people less autistic. I don't think it matters how many shrinks or chanters or dietary nutters are summoned, the autistic person is autistic as the left handed person is gay (or something).

What's need is a strategy to manage the life of the person accepting that he or she is and will remain autistic. Taking that perspective it makes no sense to move from a country where the state assumes responsibility for the disabled to one where it does not unless you have and can bequeath sufficient funds that the autistic person will not need financial support.

Yes we do have Canadian citizenship.
