Sorry but another healthcare questions
Hi
I know this is a bit of a random question but how does the Canadian healthcare system cover egular healthcare checks such as regular breast screening programmes, cervical smears, prostrate screening programs and bowel cancer screening which we receive here on the NHS free once we reach certain ages, is it something we pay for with our insurance or is publicly funded?
I assume all child immunisations are publicly funded also?

Hi
1. Doesn't cover PSA for prostrate, at least in BC. Cost you $30.00

My OH needed a mammogram check up recently - she requested it outside of the normal screening process, and it was arranged within a week. It's covered under provincial healthcare, as are most of the other items you mention.

Mammogram and cervical smear (pap test) is done here free - I can only refer to Nova Scotia because thats where I live.
Routine yearly mammograms begin at the age of 40 here which is 10 years earlier than in the UK. Mammograms are done at local hospitals plus NS also has a mobile unit to ensure even the most rural areas are covered.
Again, unlike the UK, routine pap tests have no lower age limit but should be done within 3 years of becoming sexually active or the age of 21 whichever is soonest. Continues up until you are 75 or older depending on your circumstances (stops at 65 in UK unless needed). Your family doctor or Well Woman clinic can carry out the procedure.
Colon Cancer is screened for all 50-74 year olds. Samples can be taken at home and sent to the lab for screening at no cost.
There does not seem to be routine screening for prostrate cancer. Testing would be carried out if referred by a family doctor.
Adults here also have routine yearly bloodwork done no matter what age. A good thing in my opinion

"Regular" kids immunizations are free (in Ontario). If you want something like a hep A/B shot for a vacation abroad, then it will cost you. lots, as I recall.

Mammograms are done here (Ontario) yearly from 40 for free, and smears are done yearly for free too
