In addition... they made the move. They should look for the positives in their new life and stop dwelling on the negatives. As long as the mother keeps looking at the past she'll never pull out of the doldrums.

If the Mum is not happy the kids will likely pick up on that and follow suit. Teenagers will often moan given half the chance ;)

Most Brits move because Canada looks all romantic and far away with fluffy snow and cuddly bears.

They also hear that Canada is 'crying out' for labour, and that homes are bigger and waaaaaaay cheaper.

They grasp onto this idylic notion of a better life with more spare cash and bronzed skin as they whizz down the mountains on ther new found love of skis.

Then they arrive and realise how deluded they've been.

Hence your neighbour.

The bigger the denial, the more true it is I reckon.

American evangelistic preachers seem to have this issue, a lot.

Yes, actually.

A few days ago I became acquainted with a family from Birmingham, England who immigrated to Canada about two years ago.

The father seems comfortable here although he stated that it was because of a job. The mother and the two kids, aged 14 and 16, seem to be quite unhappy whenever I've been invited to visit them at their home. Well, actually, the mother seems to be more reserved about it than the two kids.

Both of the kids seem to be fans of soccer and the mother doesn't seem to leave the house much besides to check and water her plants outside.

I'm assuming that the mother and kids were much happier back in England than here and it intrigued me when the mother would mention how much she adored Birmingham, missed the BBC, her friends, travelling to London, France, etc.

Based on their perceived unhappiness, I became intrigued with how comfortable they were in England and if this sentiment is shared by other British immigrants/expats.

Although she might also have her own reasons for being unhappy, I've found that mothers tend to be unhappy when their kids are unhappy. They seem to be much more in tune with their kids' happiness than the fathers do in my experience. From my own experiences and from those of other people I know, children tend to adapt to moves easier when they are younger. If the kids are 14 and 16 now and only moved 2 years ago, they might be at a stage where they are finding it very difficult to adapt. If you took Canadian kids of a similar age out of Vancouver and moved them to Birmingham, it's possible you'd have similar issues. Younger kids are less likely to have the same issues simply because they don't spend as long at their initial home and don't have the same amount of time to get used to the lifestyle, make friends, etc.

Why don't you suggest an evening out? Befriend the woman instead of thinking it's a Brit thing. Of course the husband may be a total control freakbwho doesn't let his wife out. Who knows.

She should try and put on a Brummie accent that should make her feel at home.

Do they really? If that is so, then it sounds very cliched and naive in the extreme or are you just being satirical?
Personally, I didn't. I came without here without any illusions and so far I've had no real "shocks". Furthermore I have no regrets about leaving the UK either.

They don't like people like you on this forum. If you don't toe the party line of "Canada is shit. Why did I come here? The UK is better. Would love to go back but can't because <insert weak reason here>." then prepare for sarcastic attacks from the anti-Canada pack. :)

Really ? That seems an equally broad generalisation. Not sure I, for one, have posted huge amounts of anti-Canada diatribe.

One doesn't have to live here to make comments upon threads.

I think the fact that some posters have pavlovian responses to comments on this forum is very funny.
