Soccer in Vancouver?

Hi Everyone,

Me and my partner will be moving to Vancouver from the UK after Xmas, and I will be looking for an amateur soccer team to play for. I currently play at a decent amateur standard in the UK - does anyone have any info on teams/leagues in Van, and what standard they are? I have seen the website for the Metro League - anyone have any experience of playing in this league?

Cheers!!

If you play in the back four, have a bit of pace and as you sound under about 30 you could stay where you are as LUFC are looking for (cheap) new blood. Amateur standard at present but hoping to improve. In fact I would go so far as pleading with you to stay.

Hi,
Check www.bcsoccer.net/bcsa/
www.bcsoccerweb.com/classifieds.htm
Vancouver has easy access to the beaches and mountain resorts.
Inspite of the rain, people still go outdoors ,we are laid back and
easy going. Our water is good and safe. The transit system is just OK,
not as good as London's. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the
coastal mountains while riding on the sky train.
Welcome to Vancouver.Hopefully you could network with other
players from the above websites and find a team .

Apparently soccer is very popular south of the fraser. 1500 soccer players plus, I have been told and lots of footy pitches. North of the Frasher tends to be more posh - a bit like north and south of the Thames- funny really a lot of brits live north of the fraser. :scared:

Edge,

Amateur footie in Vancouver is very strong and solid. The VMSL is by far the most structured and organized league. Quite a few Vancouver Whitecap (play in the USL) players have come out of the Premier Division of the VMSL. I myself now play in the O35's Division with my CLub as I will be 40 in a few months. The web site is www.vmslsoccer.com. Another great web site is www.takethepiss.com . This web page is a general forum for football/soccer players in the VMSL & FVMSL which is the Fraser Valley league for teams east of Vancouver and on the other side of the Fraser River. If you want you can email me at [email protected] and I can answer any more questions and/or steer you to our club or a club that would be well suited for you. We have quite a few expats on our club and in fact our President is from East Ham.

Hope this helps you.

I'm not sure what gave that away? Yes indeed a MUFC fan. I've been in Vancouver since I was 5 but traveled back regularly and moved back in 85 for two years.

We love fans and our club Bombastic FC has one of the most beautiful home field settings in Vancouver right downtown and on the waterfront. Can't be beat. Our teams play home games back to back at noon and 2pm on the Saturdays and then the O35's lot play Sunday at noon as well. We are sponsored by a local brewery (one owner also a Man U fan) so the bevies are usually flowing. our club website is www.bombasticfc.ca and my email was inmy other posting so when you arrive send us a note and we will get you set up. As I say we have a few ex-pats in the squads as well as a number of well educated footie enthusiats with ties to the UK. Hate so say though......a fair few LFC supporters.

Great to hear from some fellow (albeit Man Utd!) football fans living in Vancouver!! Georgie, I have sent you an email. Your club looks great - loving the fact you're sponsored by a brewery!! Last time I was in Vanocouver I watched Leeds play Valencia in the Champions league at the Dover Arms (on Denman??). I don't hold out much hope that Leeds will be on TV for the next decade, but I'll be over the moon to find anyone to play and watch a bit of footie with in Vancouver!!

Just don't tell my other half.... :scared:

Ah yes the Arms is a great place to catch the matches as well. In fact better atmosphere than Smiley's but for walking distance from the office Smiley's works over the dinner time. I'll check my email.

I'm a friend of Georgie's best and he knows nothing about football!! Well, very little! Actually Mark is a great guy who does a lot for our club. We have plenty of English players in our many teams so if you are looking for a well run and social club then check out the website mentioned above and get in touch with Mark.

Also, if you are a Villa fan then get bakc to me!!

Soccer in Canada is a joke. If you are looking for skilled players, there aren't any.
Soccer is a recreational sport here.
The sport is managed by old has beens who never played top class soccer anywhere.
But if you're any good you'll soon find that out.

Well where in canada are you basing your experience on and to what expectation level are you comparing?

Hackney marshes sunday leagues or EPL. Most soccer is sunday league standard, if you above that then you'll be looking to play semi-pro-level some indoor leagues and larger cities have some but its then A-league pro.

It's ok just checked you only other post Vancouver - whitecap fan no wonder bitter.

So long as there is soccer, at whatever standard, I will be happy! I have long since given up hope of being picked out by a pro club scout..... :D

WHAT!

You must be the bigshot around here, after all you've seen every soccer league in canada and can comprehensively condem it.

Ooops sorry!

I forgot all about the great talent in Canada. That's why Canada has such a brilliant national team.

They are going to wear their shirts back to front next season so it looks like they are attacking.

BTW Who did you ever play for?

Gotta get back to the tele.
