So I got the Job!!!!

Which means I will be starting in January of next year HRDC willing....

It's a really great job, I even get my own office and I'm absolutely thrilled.

Now all I have to do is sell the flat, learn to drive, get rid of all the stuff that won't be making the trip, resign.... etc. etc....

:scared: :p

HRDC?

You're coming over on a work visa and you're planning to sell your flat?

Have fun ....

Your point being?

My understanding is that if I get a work visa, which I probably should given the fact that I have experience in an area that is highly specialised, I will be able to extend it as necessary. I'm also going to put in a PR application when I land....

Re: So I got the Job!!!!

Congratulations Sarah, sounds great.

I would hold onto the flat for a while if you can rent it out to pay the mortgage. You never know how you will like Canada, so its worth keeping it for a while as a parachute If you sell up and then chose to or have to move back you will almost certainly lose a lot of money. Keep in mind too that a work permit is not very flexible if you get laid off...and it does happen!

In the long run you might even end up making good money from renting the place out it, converting £ to $.

Hardest thing I found was treading water in my old job while waiting for the work permit to come through. DONT resign just yet! There is no gaurantee the permit will come through after all!

Good Luck

Iain

I'm not sure yet, one of my reasons for moving is that I'm really fed up to the back teeth of the big city thing. At the moment, Oakville or Burlington look good, the commute is the same length that I do in the UK, with much cleaner, cheaper and reliable trains, not to mention always being able to get a seat.

I might try an apartment downtown to see how I adapt to it, but my cats really like the outdoors, so I need to figure them into wherever I end up living. However I really like the idea of having a garden and a deck to sup beers on while the sun goes down :)

Our cats like the outside...but only in the Summer! Winter comes they just park in front of the fire!

Better watch out they dont get involved with Racoons and the like, its a worry with rabies etc. We are converting ours back into indoor cats at the moment as one is getting bad allergies to something outside.

Most of the newer apartment complexes (around here anyway) have a balcony to relax on....its somewhere to put the grill, even if the fire code forbids it!

Also consider the fact that its easier to bring a cat to Canada than to take it back to the UK - something you will need to consider if for any reason your PR doesnt come through. I know its not fun to think about but you would be better prepared if you consider all possibilities.

get your pet set up in the pet pasport scheme as soon as you arrive or if you've got time get it moving in the Uk first.. that way if you decide to chuck it in you can bring your pet home with you....
