Great guides Steve

The coldest wind chill recorded in Canada was at Pelly Bay, Nunavut, on January 13, 1975, when 56 km/h winds (a wind chill factor of 3,357 watts/m²) made the temperature of ‑51 C feel more like ‑92 C.

Steve, thanks for this, OH and I have just read the articles and they have some good advice to newbies like us.

Perhaps this post should be added to the WIKI?

Knit him a hammock/sling to hoist his bits in. -- or just get them chopped off

I can knit but I think a hammock will be useless -bless him, he loves the snow but at -25 his bits are not playing fair so it's a trip to our vet for him I'm afraid

Bumping this thread with an article featured in the local paper this week (about tests run on volunteers in a refrigerated wind tunnel a few years ago).

http://www.ec.gc.ca/EnviroZine/engli...feature3_e.cfm

Frostbite guidelines that apply to most healthy Canadian adults
  • When the wind chill index is -27 or warmer, the risk of frostbite is low.
  • When the wind chill factor is between -28 to -39, the risk of frostbite rapidly increases.
  • At a wind chill factor of -40, frostbite will occur in less than 10 minutes on exposed skin, for most people.
  • At a wind chill of -55, frostbite will occur in 2 minutes or less on exposed skin, for most people.
