SIN # and CoPR
Hi all
My husband has been applying for jobs - but the moment he mentions that he doesn't have his SIN number yet (we land Sept 14th) recruiters go silent? He has offered to scan his CoPR so they can see he has status it's just a matter of going to a Service Canada and getting a number. Any ideas on how to frame this? Or are we just going to have to wait till we land? Also do you get a number immediately at Service Canada? |
Re: SIN # and CoPR
Getting a SIN is 10 minute job at Service Canada. If you land at Toronto you may be able to get the SIN there and then (I believe there is a Service Canada office in the airport). CoPR is not any proof of status unless it is signed/stamped by immigration officer.

Re: SIN # and CoPR
Go to any Services Canada office once you have landed, take passport, stamped copy CoPR and ask for a SIN - you cannot get a SIN until you have landed and declared PR. They issue you one there and then. You could do it same day as landing if you want or any time thereafter. They give you a printout with the number there and then. They stopped issuing SIN cards a few years ago.

Re: SIN # and CoPR
It's often difficult to secure a job in Canada without being physically there anyway (if the employer wants to interview you the following day for example, you'd be looking at a very expensive flight). Just bring some savings to cover you for at least one or two months while you job hunt.

I've corrected the original  The whole 'what is provincual and what us federal' is not something Brits are familiar with, although I cant help but wonder if say the UK did create 'provinces' of England, Wales, Scotland and NI with tax, VAT and health at that level, if that wouldnt kill the current penchant for votes on 'independence '. |
Re: SIN # and CoPR
Service Canada desk at Toronto Pearson is open until 9pm if you’re doing your landing there. It’s right next to the immigration desks where you do your landing paperwork so you can get your SINs before collecting your bags. |
