As it should, we have our own fair share of criminal in Canada, without adding to them

In Dollface's defence - she wasn't the OP (but reading through some of her other posts, she can defend herself )

Um, many thanks all. However, I'm not looking for moral advice (perhaps you should direct that to the banks and politicians, who have colluded to spend billions of your taxes on encouraging the failures of casino capitalism.)
Does anyone actually have any direct (and impartial) experience of this, please?

We have a friend here who left the U.K with debt, it was under £10 000 and debt collectors turned up at his front door in canada and he had to pay the whole lot back.
I dont think the country can afford to not find you to be honest, and by what others have said it doesnt seem to be that hard.

I have a couple of friend's working in the debt collection industry, one rather high up. Through conversation before they have told me of the statute-barred law. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/ihtmanual/ihtm28384.htm
Not that I encourage such a thing, but it does exist.
In short, if you can avoid the debt for 6 years, without acknowledging it in any way shape or form, avoid making contact with the company or any affliates, the company may be barred from continuing to pursue the debt wtih you. That being said, it would utterly destroy your credit rating in the UK. You would also have to be 100% on your game about knowing who is contacting you and who you are speaking to on the phone/answering the door.
A quick funny story on this law.. The same friend who works in the industry told me he once had someone ring up to say 'its been 6 years, this debt is now statute-barred and you can no longer contact me about the debt' well..he got his dates wrong it was a day before the 6 years, and as that link above says, the 6 years reset.. haha
