Shipping Things...Again!

Sorry to raise this old chestnut but.....

I have looked through the various threads and Wiki but can't find a list of shipping agents people have already used.

We have had a quote from one company of £6500 just to Saint John! I would then need to pay to have it moved from there to Cambridge-Narrows

That price did include sending my car also - but non of the dealing with customs for the car at the other end - only the transit to Saint John. I would really like to bring my Mitsubishi Delica with me - Several reasons for this include 1. its brilliant 2. its really brilliant 3. it has 8 seats so the whole family fit in including the dog 4. its 4wd and very reliable. I know there are a few Canadian Delica owners in NB so there are some on the roads there. It is older than 15 years (1993 model).

Has anybody else shipped a car over? I was originally told a container was a fixed cost whatever we put in it however the company that has quoted so far wanted an extra £2000 to put the car in the container as well

Any tips or advice?

Cheers

Concerning your vehicle: have you read through all this? Several posters have done it.
Importing Vehicles into Canada - Transport Canada

For shipping everything else: get more than one quote. £6500 does not sound outrageously unreasonable for a whole container including car.

It can well be over $30k to move across Canada by road here. So that makes the UK cost across the ocean look really tiny.

Lordy! Ouch!

Shirtback apologies - I am clearly not doing the right search terms or something :o Thanks for the link I shall put on a brew and start reading!

We have just had a quote back to ship the car independantly of household stuff for £1000 to Halifax with a specialist vehicle shipping firm.

Dave,

I'm on an uncooperative phone ATM :(, so can't link.

Regarding your vehicle, try plugging "importing a vehicle to Canada site:britishexpats.com" into Google. As well as reading the TC site I *did* manage to link above.

Just a thought...have you checked out insurance for your vehicle and also how much it will cost to bring it up to Canadian standards?

Yes the insurance is unbelievable compared to the UK

Had some helpful advice from the Delica Canada forum regarding standards but most of the current owners are west coasters - they all had theres imported via Vancouver or specialist Japanese import dealers.

As the car is older than 15 years it makes things slightly easier - I believe might be wrong though.

The relevant point is that insurers in Canada don't like RHD (they don't like people driving either but there's nothing to be done about that), expect the premiums to be startling.

Re: Shipping Things...Again!

So having used SB suggested search method I see that on one of the threads and according to the Transport Canada website you can use a foreign registered vehicle in Canada for upto 12 months if you are on a vistors visa.

So new plan....send my Discovery over on UK plates meet it at Halifax then drive it to run errands etc - get family from airport then just use it on our own land after that.

So I guess that all sounds simple enough right? What are the practical steps here? Load vehicle here in UK. Try and ensure I am in Canada for it arriving then what? I guess I will need my MOT cert, insurance and V5 with me? I am guessing I then let border people know that I am using to travel across Canada??

Principles all sound fine to me its the doing bit we are struggling with......not just with this but also moving our stuff, kids, dog etc. We are going to be without stuff at one end or another for a while. Pack it up send it and live here in an empty house for a while or pack it up move and live there in an empty house for a while.

Re : your first paragraph: I think you might have skipped/missed some of the numerous caveats on the RIV site - you'll still need to register the vehicle in the Canadian province you reside in to drive & insure it legally. You should look up the requirements for that too ;)

It's not impossible, but it's really not that simple; older than 15 years helps.

Thanks SB. It will only be taking in 'temporarily' not imported to start with. That said, it is exactly 15 years old now. Manufactured August 2000! So I could probably import it also (its just its RHD - not a problem for me but might be an insurance cost issue. I believe I can use it for up to 12 months on its UK Reg (provided it remains MOT'd taxed and insured) on a visitors permit. It will be consigned to use on our land only though once we are there.

Re: Shipping Things...Again!

It can be brought in temporarily, yes, then imported permanently if it qualifies (Sounds like it probably will). But if it doesn't, it has to be exported or destroyed ...

Did the 12 month limit to drive temporarily without registering come from the provincial authorities (sorry, can't remember which province you are moving to)?

I'm not being nitpicky for the sake of it, just don't want you to run into any surprises - I do think you'll take a huge hit on insuring it :(.
