books , cds/dvds + lots of computer gear
plus 2 office chairs (expensive ones)
i'm guessing i dont need a full container and will

You can save a fair bit on sharing a container (depending on how much space you need as you are charged by cubic foot), but it can also come with additional issues on the shipping timelines. We decided for the amount of stuff we had (books, power tools etc) that even though there was some space in our container we would prefer sole use, so paid the extra. When a container is shared you have less choice about the delivery times, as you are forced to work with someones elses schedule too - usually frustrating for both parties.
That said, I am sure some folks on here have shared containers and had no issues at all. No doubt they will come along and let you know.
With regards to shipping companies, we used PSS even though we were also quoted by Robinsons. PSS were by far the cheapest quote, and the packers we had were fast and polite. All in all a helpful service, and I know a few folks on here have used them. Get as many quotes as you can, but if they are not on the list of quotes do add them.

I don't know if this is of use, but have you considered Air Cargo if you don't have a lot of things to send?
Air Transat Cargo will put your items on the same flight as you... my son has just had a quote of £150 for 100 kilo's. Insurance is much cheaper too!

A shared or 'groupage' container will be cheaper than shipping a half empty sole use container. It will be proportionately more expensive per cubic foot of space you use than a full container as the shipper has to account for consolidation, loading, unloading and de-consolidation costs. There is a break point for all shipments where the cost of shipping LCL (Less than Container Load) becomes higher than shipping a full container. I.e. you might as well pay for a full container as you are using most of one anyway. This varies from shipment to shipment but it sounds like a shared unit is the way to go for you.

Hi, we used EVL, their's was the cheapest quote at the time and we had a shared container. All in all we were quite happy with them .
