shipping quotes suck :(

got our quotes in and it all sucks - apparently fuel surcharges are huge and also from march 1st there is addtional charges by the shipping people (the boat ones)

derby, uk to edmonton, canada

estimates (come to house quotes) range between 840ft to 1000ft ie 20foot container - them pack etc - door to door - AND them going through a 3rd party in canada for billing to our new employer

Britannia - £6K plus £60 a week storage plus insurance of 2.5%
Robinsons - £6K plus £300 a month storage plus 2.5% insurance
Pickfords - £7.5K (no news ons toage costs) insurance 2.5%

had a few others in by emails (no house vist but going off 20ft fully packed)

Excess - £4800K plus storage
1st move - £4700 plus storage (£260 a month)
Atlantic - £4800 plus storage (£30 a week)

Foxs are coming today and Whites on Friday so see what they say (they dont know its a company transfer)

we have such a tight budget from the new employers aswell to cover removals, flights, visas, fees etc... :( will have to go back an renegotiate it :( totally sucks :(

Don't forget that you can get a tax break for removal costs not reimbursed by your employer. That might take the sting out of it.

We moved Oct 03 and used The International Moving Company
http://www.int-moving.com/ 0800 622519

I know its a while ago but our filled 20 foot container was moved from North Derbyshire to Ontario for about £3800 plus insurance. They did everything. All packing in the UK and unloading into our new house here. They said it would take 4-6 weeks. Bloody container arrived in 2!!!! So we had to pay for storage. We used the St Helens office and the guys were all great. Highly recommended.

OK, An option to reduce cost. Find a freight forwarder and see if you can get a quote for shipping only - door to door including the seafreight cost. Not all freight forwarders want to be bothered with personal effects but some will do it. They may be able to arrange cargo insurance (2.5% of freight cost is high for a business but I'm guessing reasonable for an individual), or you could do this yourself. Go buy cardboard boxes from 'Big Yellow Self Storage' or some such similar place and pack yourself. Possessions easy, furniture, well you can do the best you can with cardboard, foam, bubblewrap etc. Packing material costs are going to be at least GBP250 I'd say. The actual freight part of your GBP4800 quotes is going to be at least GBP2500-3000 door to door. So your savings potential is probably a grand max. If this is worth it for you then might be worth considering.

Either that or renegotiate your relocation package?!

EDIT: This is what I did but I was shipping personal effects only and no furniture. I shipped 20 or so boxes for around 400 quid but I did get a deal through family contacts.

Bloody hell!!

We paid £3400 for a 20 ft container from Hampshire to NB. They packed in the UK and unpacked in Canada. We used White and Co and were generally impressed with the service. I know we did this last May but costs surely cant have doubled in 9 months? Make sure you negotiate the storage as well. We managed to get 3 months free out of them

Good luck

more quotes in :(

Whites: £5,580 (that insurance storage & insurance)
International: £5,000 (no insurance or storage)

Though got a fab quote from www.advanceforwarding.com the are local to us...

if we pack our stuff - they'll do the container bit... its £3K plus £200 storage for 2 months plus 2.5% insurance... only thing is we'd have to pay customs at other end - apparently about $300 or so... also we'd have to dot he inventory etc ourselves which isnt an issue... BUT the will only bill us not the company...

so seeing if employer will do that route

We are using Pickfords, they are charging Stg 4500 for 1050 sq ft from Lincoln to Kitchener (about 60 miles west of Toronto) including full dismantling and re-assembly. It also includes double packing for a lot of solid expensive wooden furniture.

Insurance is 2.5% but watch out because if you want matching sets/pairs insurance it's double that.

I tried hard to negotiate lower but that's the best I could get!!

If you tell them it's a corporate move, then they just double it! That seems to be what happened to us.

But then we weren't paying!

Hi
That's interesting, we're on Devon/Somerset boarder (Wellington-ish) and are going to Nova Scotia. All our quotes have been in the £4,500 region and above. We've got Whites coming next week.
Just out of interest, where are you going to?
