Default Shipping Leeds to Niagara

Hi guys, we have just received our permits so are planning our move. We are coming from Leeds to Niagara region. I am looking for some recommendations for movers. On the forum i am finding a lot of people wanting to go back to UK but can't find any advice on UK-C. We want to bring furniture and have some expensive artwork that needs to be crated up safely. Is there a big cost saving in packing yourself rather than paying someone to do it? Any other tips appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have clearance to enter Canada - and are you aware that you will be required to quarantine for 2 weeks as soon as you arrive?

Hopefully you are aware of the Ontario Landlord / tenant act - rentals generally start from the 1st of the month - so if they advertised today it will usually be for a tenancy starting 1 November. (Tenants have to give 60 days notice).
You will pay first and last months rent when you sign a lease (which will be for 12 months duration, so pick carefully!) and will need to arrange for utilities etc., (who will also want a deposit) unless it's included in your rent.

As you aren't arriving until next week and then quarantining for 2 weeks you may struggle to find a property to move into for 1st November - so be prepared to have to wait until 1st December.

We are planning to find something then come home and pack once we know the size of our place and how much we can take as likely smaller than our place here so we hope to start a tenancy from 1st Dec. I have been recommend a realtor from a friend who lives there who is helping us with all the laws etc. thanks so much for advice. So much to take in and so confusing during COVID with all the extra rules!

It's often cheaper to replace furniture etc., rather than ship it.. I would reserve shipping for things that have sentimental value / antiques / personal bits and pieces / books or other things that can't easily be replaced. Shipping isn't cheap! On that note (and back on topic) - have you considered sending your belongings air freight (cargo) instead of shipping them? It isn't as expensive as you might think and you will save on time and insurance costs. I definitely wouldn't be shipping any sort of furniture etc., if you are only coming for a couple of years and will be in a rental ( but add it to the list for later (see below). There's plenty of advice to be had on where to buy cheap furniture or kitchen bits and pieces, bedding etc., to tide you over.

There's lots of advice in our wiki on shipping https://britishexpats.com/wiki/What_to_ship-Canada - what works here, what doesn't work here as well as bed sizes! If you are hoping to relocate to Canada permanently, and your tenure in Canada with the TWP is for more than a year or two, you should consider creating goods accompanying and goods to follow lists (absolutely anything and everything you might ever want to bring over, even if it's in 6 years time!) so that you don't have to pay duty on them.

This information will be helpful if you are:
  • entering Canada with the intention of establishing, for the first time, a residence for one year or more (in the Customs Tariff, such a person is referred to as a "settler");

Just be mindful that they're not letting people in to Canada on work permits if the reason for travel is 'discretionary or optional'. Personally I'd say a reccie trip is optional/discretionary, you may not be able to enter until you're actually moving to start the job. It could be worth checking with your airline before you try and travel to see if they'll allow you to board.

Good luck.

Is there a reason you want to move to NoTL? It is a very touristy town. Unless you are talking about somewhere more rural away from the town itself?
