Default Shipping a few items

After recently losing his parents, my husband inherited a few pieces of furniture, no great value just sentimental worth. Would anyone have any suggestions for the most economical way to have them shipped from the Midlands to British Columbia? When we emigrated 10 years ago, we used Whites for our full container shipment, but their quote for these few items was over $2000.
Also does anyone know if we will be charged custom taxes on personal items?
Thanks for any feedback you can offer.

Official CBSA word on inheritance goods here:

Memorandum D2-1-5 - Bequests - Tariff Item no. 9806.00.00

Bottom line - unlikely to be a problem.
