Re: Shipping companies

i think it's been said before re the ship or replace argument - but having just come thru the shipping experience am glad i went that way - yes expensive at 4000ish for a container - but looking around Cowtown shops i find i would have to replace some decent kit with uber-chinty tat, so factor that in & also the lost weekends of shopping (& delivery waits) until you re-stock

-also a good point re the extra rec/family room, we were fortunate in having an ikea down the road to pad the place out a bit

I do think its worth taking stuff, when you look at it your way, you forget about all the time looking for stuff never mind paying for it.
I just keep thinking about new life, new start and new stuff.
But i guess i will still need new stuff to fill the much larger house we are planning to buy.

Hi
We're at the same stage as you, and have decided to take stuff, and then if we don't need it/want to buy new when we get there, we can choose new stuff at our leisure and hand the rest on to charity.
Means we can do it at our own pace....:)

Hi all,

We've got our first quotes back, I'll post the rest of them as they arrive.

Robinsons
20ft container, packing and door to door transit = £4,550

40ft container, packing and door to door transit - £5,475

Hope that helps!

Great, would appreciate that - we're moving Milton Keynes to BC in the spring.:)

Ok next quote is from Bishops:
40ft container, packing and door to door transit = £6,178

They also think we have as much as 300sq/ft more than Robinsons.

Should get White's quote next!

And who's job is it to make up the "Itemised List", is it down to you or the removal company??

Many thanks.

It's so confusing!

Our quotes have just started coming in for a move from Wiltshire to St John's Newfoundland.

We were quoted between £4400 and £4800 for a 20ft, £3500 to share a container (which will have to go to Quebec first then back to Newfie) or £1200 just to ship 20 boxes of personal belongings.

Just rang Air Canada cargo - you can book 30 days ahead - the lady wouldn't give me a figure but said she couldn't see that it would cost half of that and if I phone her back with box sizes and weights she will give me a figure. But we have to get the boxes to Heathrow and pack them ourselves.

AX if you're out there and don't mind my asking - how did you get your belongings to the rcok? It is getting tempting to sell our furniture here and have a field day at Stavenger Drive!

The chap who came round to see us said that if I packed anything before they arrived I should add an itemised list to the top of the box - they would do them for the boxes they packed.

Thanks for that TownieGirl.

All we are taking is personal items, no furniture or electricals, about 10 to 12 boxes.

Is it ok to label them, Misc. ornaments, books, clothes etc or should each item be listed??

Thanks.

He actually suggested that I start an Excel spreadsheet with a detailed list of everything packed and that the sheet for each box was available at the top of the box. He implied the easier it was to identify the goods, the less chance of them all being taken apart for inspection.

Ah, well most of my furniture was from IKEA so a) it wasn't worth much and b) it probably wouldn't have survived the journey. I shipped 20 boxes/crates of personal effects and used a freight forwarder. I got a deal as it was the company my father used to work for & they don't usually handle personal effects. (too much aggro). So yes, we have spent a lot of money at Stavanger Drive, primarily with La-z-boy! We basically furnished an entire home from La-z-boy, Island Furniture, Sears & Mill Lane. Oh yes and the price club of course. Something to bear in mind (I'm sure you know this) is that St. John's doesn't have a huge choice of furniture retaillers.

Those shipping costs seem high compared to elsewhere in Canada, but as you know there are limited freight services directly to here. It might be worth contacting Eimskip in Immingham. Eimskip run a container service via Iceland to Argentia, Newfoundland. If you take a look at their website they do talk about personal effects shipping albeit for people moving to the Uk. Might be worth a call to see whether they can quote you for move to here. http://www.eimskip.com/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-200/

Our shipping company (White & Co) packed everything and made a general list for every box. 20ft container = total 132 boxes. Example of descriptions are:

1. Shoes and Handbags
2. Clothes
3. Toys
4. China
5. Cushions

Eeek, just noticed on the list 'BBQ' - hope it wasn't our outdoor one (or disposibles ) . We were supposed to be leaving the gas one for the new people moving into our house. I'll be laughed out of Canada as our UK BBQ will be tiny compared to some the monsters we've seen here

Anyway, back to the subject, the movers leave a copy of the inventory and they also posted another copy to our address in NS. We will take this to customs when we clear our shipment. No work needed by us. Nice and simple (after the trauma of the move of course)
