Self employed in Canada

Hi all,
Well we have been here a year now and are officially classed as 'permanent residents' - question?
My hubby wants to become self-employed, he is a carpenter by trade but can do general construction too - ie:roofing, ground work, tiling, plastering (British style) and in the UK he done general electrical and plumbing. He might be able to build you a house, you never know!!!!
Does anyone know where we go from here..... Apparently you don't become self employed, you have to start a business as a sole proprietor????
What are the tax implications? Would he be better off as a 'self employed' /sole proprietor person? If he wanted to buy a property as a self-employed person what are the restrictions for getting a mortgage? Do you need to show 3 years accounts as in the UK. It is a real struggle here on a lead carpenters wage and we are looking for a way to succeed - help guys!!
Be happy
