Bibles for Missions
https://www.valuevillage.com/
https://thriftstore.ca/
(You can buy new mattresses at some Salvation army stores, but I'm not sure how their prices compare to buying new in an after-Christmas sale. You might be able to buy something online from a store for delivery after you move. We did this when we bought our mattress at Sears)

Also, see if there's a Giant Tiger near you. Dollarama is good for starting out. Decent kitchen stuff (the Betty Crocker brand), front door mats, paint rollers, containers etc.

Try Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. I've found good deals there on better quality furniture.

Value Village, Bibles for Missions and Salvation Army stores often have sales. It's worth signing up for their emails. The sales are ususally 1 day only.

Best discount warehouse place i've found in the north is probably Army and Navy up in Sunridge
I've said in another thread that Betty Crocker stuff is better than just to start out with...it lasts for ages and you don't worry about abusing it cos it's so cheap!

There's only the one Giant Tiger in Calgary now...on 17th Ave SE in Forest Lawn, and it kinda sucks lol

The equivalent of Oxfam etc are much bigger - they usually have the same floorspace as a Tesco. As a result, most of them do have furniture.
Value Village
Goodwill
Those are the two I can think of, off the top of my head.

Also (I should read your post more thoroughly):
There is a goodwill close to Market Mall and there is a Value Village in Silver Springs. Both of them will likely have some furniture.
There is also a Value Village near Chinook close to a C-Train station.

Have you thought about using inflatable furniture temporarilly?
(Don't knock it - this is exactly what we did till our furniture arrived on the container)
You can get an inflatable mattress for probably $50-$100.

Re: Second hand furniture shops in Calgary?
We have it pretty easy in one sense- as my husband's job is with the university we're renting one of their houses and get the keys for that the day after we get there. We're spending a few nights in a hotel regardless, while we get some things.
We already have a planned trip to IKEA pretty much for our second day there where we'll be buying a bed, mattress, some kitchen bits and bobs (crockery, cutlery etc etc). Then as far as we're concerned everything else can wait. The house comes with a fully fitted kitchen so don't have to worry about the more expensive goods for that.
So then we were wanting second hand shops for other pieces of less essential furniture, e.g. chest of drawers, tv unit, sofa, bookcase, dining table and chairs etc. I usually do up pieces we buy anyway so happy to do that. In fact- I'd rather do that than buy flat pack furniture.
Dont fancy buying inflatable things as I'd just see it as wasted money to be honest. So long as I have somewhere comfortable to sleep at night to start with! Haha
