I'm afraid I think the "gifted" designation as applied in GTA schools means only "native English speaker with an interested and reasonably affluent parent". If such children are not "gifted" then they're learning disabled, ADHD, or otherwise in need of Ritalin. There aint no ordinary kids round here. |

The "gifted" designation is not just applicable to GTA schools, but a province wide designation. My family is certainly not affluent by any means. We live in a small house in a not very affluent neighbourhood. I don't know when your children went to school, but you seem to be generalizing a little bit. Peel is not Halton and as a matter of fact, in my daughter's class of 18 children about 1/2 are not what you are describing (native English speaking with affluent, interested parents)
The SAT is most certainly written in Ontario though not by all students. Often the test is conducted at a university, though it's for high school students, York and the UofT conduct the tests as do all private and some publicly funded high schools. At the school my children attended, up to the year 2003, they only automatically entered students who were expected to break 1500, that is, they automatically entered the "gifted" students. |
