No.
here you can go to a school out of catchment, lots of people do. Whether you get in or not depends on how many other people are trying to get in. Generally catchment (same as school zone, or district) kids get priority, though. There are quite a few specialized schools around here, hence the flexibility. Also there are lotteries for some schools. in BC, every city has it's own enrolment process....I know kids from outside of burnaby can come to burnaby schools, but they have to fill out a form etc to do so and their child has a lower priority than the child of a burnaby resident. Within the city, each school has a priority catchment zone, so if you really want you child to get into x school, you need to live in the schools' catchment. They have maps showing the boundaries. I believe Van is similar, can't help you with other cities though. HTH. |

Generally the same applies in Alberta, although a lot depends upon your relationship with the school. My wife volunteers at the school and she has been told by the Principal that, if we were to move, she would move heaven and earth to ensure our kids would be able to remain at that school (providing travelling to and from did not become an issue)

Re: Is school enrolment process same in each province??
In Calgary there are some schools that will accept out of area. These tend to be in slightly older areas. Our school has 25-30% out of area. Some of the very good schools in Calgary accept out of area students.
Also in Calgary there are what I think they call divisions and once you are in a division you are entitled to be schooled up to the end of the division at that school even if the school stops accepting out of area students. Divisional boundaries are weird though, there is one at the KG/Gr1 boundary, one at the end Gr 3, one at end Gr 6. This is apparently up for review as there is some thought that the divisional boundaries should match the schools that exist, or are being built. Eg removing the end Gr 3 division because Calgary are building lots of K-4 schools. |
