Saskatoon
Hi there!
I just wanted to get a bit of feed back from people living out in Saskatoon! I'm living in Montreal, QC and I friend of mine is moving from Mtl to Saskatoon next month. She's originally from China and has lived in Mtl for 12 years and this is a sudden move for her and she is worried as she has never been to Saskatoon before. The reason for the move is that her Husband got a great job offer that's guaranteed for 4 years so she has to go...can anyone give any advice on where to look for an apartment, good areas to live, social activities etc - all that good stuff so I can pass it on to her?! Also they have a 4 year old son and she is looking for a good daycare for him too! Thank you so much for your help! Kate  |
Re: Saskatoon
Saskatoon is a great place to live the people are super friendly and helpful the city is split into East and West by the river generally the East side is a little more affluent to live and dont live south of 22nd street on the west side but most of the city is great to live in some schools are huge so look carefully we choose to live outside the city in Martensville 10 min commute on double highway you get more for your money but our main reason was the schooling smaller school small classes great help with special educational needs. Just make sure you have the right clothes for the Prairie winter its great until the wind blows keep your face covered. Good luck to your friends they can contact us when they arrive.

Re: Saskatoon
We moved to Saskatoon last June, after 2 years in Southern Ontario and before that 9 months in Montreal.
First thing they will notice how small the place is compared to somewhere like Montreal (tiny really), no underground sections to the City (apart from the basement of the Mall), very little in the way of good quality restaraunts, etc. We have rented in the City Centre, just off 25th Street, perhaps a little more expensive than other areas but as my wife does not drive it seemed a good place to start. We also found it difficult finding a place from Ontario, we luckily had a friend in the area who helped out. From my limited experience, I would agree that south of 22nd is not attractive on the West, I would say no-where West of Idelwyld. East of Warman Road, North of the 25th are the areas West of the river that I would contemplate. The closer to the Cuty Centre you are though, the more likely you are to hear 'after pub' noises in the nights during the non-winter period. Our friends live in the Lawson Heights area which is quite good, all the areas north of Citcle Drive around there looks OK. I was told the Sutherland are was not too good when I started looking, that's East of the river, not really had much experience of the area personally though, I would also expect the areas close to the University to be noisier, again no real experience there, just from experience near Universities elsewhere lead me to that conclusion. There is a also good Asian Market, close to the Mall, West of Idlewyld. |
Re: Saskatoon
I moved into Saskatoon this September after 2years in Ontario and 6 years in Montreal before that.
I start house hunting early next year. it's a small city even driving across it in rush hour won't take that long compared to Montreal. Personally, I prefer the eastern side of the city. But that's where I work (close to the University). There also seems to be a large-ish Chinese community in Saskatoon. |
