Re: saskatoon

Whilst not living in Saskatoon I'm in the throws of moving to Prince Albert about 1 hour north of Saskatoon.
I will be doing a rec trip next week to see the area and my new employer.
One reason for me to go to this area is the cost of property, it,s a hell of a lot cheaper than BC or Alberta.
Not going to be a truck driver is your hubby that seems a popular reason for going to SK, I,m a truck mechanic.
There are lots of web site that cover Saskatoon/Prince Albert if you need to PM please do so.
One thing that ever one says it bloody cold in winter. So that might be a wake up cool for us.
Go to this link http://www.muchmormagazine.com/page4/downloads.html
and open Issue 11 there is a big section on the whole Province.
Hope something there helps
Andy

Hi Carrieann

Don't know anything about Saskatoon as we are going to Calgary (fingers crossed). However, I just searched the forum and there is plenty about Saskatoon.

Good luck

Re: saskatoon

I like Saskatoon. I don't go there much though. To me its pretty. It has the river valley. The university buildings are nice too - built of some kind of stone - don't know what it's called.

They were talking on the radio this afternoon about Saskatchewan people - in particular they were talking about the Saskatchewan Roughriders and how loyal the fans are and why Saskatchewan has such loyal fans etc. etc. and it was decided that people in Saskatchewan are used to handling adversity and so it makes them tough. They are used to people making rude remarks about the weather and the flatness and all that kind of thing - and that makes the people tough!!!

Of course Saskatchewan people have moved to Alberta for work and so when there is a game in Calgary, such as there was yesterday, it's like a home game because the stands are full of ex-Saskatchewan residents!

The headline in our paper today was "Revenge of the Gopher" - the Stampeders banned the Saskatchewan mascot - Gainer the Gopher from the semi-final - we ended up beating them! I didn't get to see the game but from what I heard there were lots of miniature gophers in the crowd. And lots of green and white!!!

Mind you, we are having a problem now because we are short of just about as many workers as they are in Alberta.

My advice is always come and see how you like it. Once you are in Canada if you don't like Saskatoon after you have given it a fair try - then move somewhere else. It's a cheap place to live; a good place to buy a house inexpensively and you at least get your foot in the door. If you have loads of money go to Vancouver, if you want to live in a tent - go to Calgary - I don't think they have any houses for sale there at any price!

Un-bloody-believable (but true!).

Hearty congratulations to the Roughriders on a great win. :)

Sorry for the thread drift, carrieann. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Saskatoon seems a decent enough city, though a bit slow compared to the big ones, if you like that kind of thing.

As for cold, I prefer Saskatchewan/Alberta winters to British winters, myself. They may hit -40 degress, but the country is designed to cope with it, the infrastructure doesn't fall apart the instant a few snow-flakes fall.
