Salary Frequency

Hi All,

All systems go for my arrival in Lethbridge AB.

I have been informed that I will be getting paid bi-monthly.

Is this the norm ?

I have never come across this arrangement while I have been working in the UK.

Re: Salary Frequency

Pretty common, if by "bi-monthly" they mean every 2 weeks.

I get paid on the 14th and 28th of each month for example.

Bi-weekly is the norm, not bi-monthly.
I would double check with your employer.

Very common. In BC, unless you are management, the labour standards say that you must be paid at least twice a month.

Bi-monthly should mean twice a month - typically on the 15th and 30th/31st. Some companies pay every two weeks. This means that two months a year you will get three pay cheques. This should be called bi-weekly but the terms are often used inter-changeably.

Thanks,

Will check but the job I am in will be more likely bi weekly.

Bi monthly ie Twice a month, is pretty normal. Bi Weekly,ie every two weeks is also pretty common. There is no right or wrong, its just how its done.

And yes for some reason in Canada they think bi-monthly actually means semi-monthly (twice a month) instead of every 2 months. Not sure why as bi-weekly means every 2 weeks to them, so not sure why they'd think bi-monthly means something different.

I get paid monthly. You do now. :)

I used to like the German system (now abandoned I believe) in which your annual salary was divided into 13ths and you'd get 1/13th every month but 2/13 at the end of November.

The idea is that you're supposed to waste it on Christmas tat, but I use to just bank it.

Scrooge? Me? Or perhaps, Schwarzer Peter? Ich?

Bi-monthly, meaning every two months, is definitely not the norm but I am guessing that the person who informed the OP simply used the incorrect term and that the pay will be twice a month (say the 15th & 30th or whatever).

But the actual definition of bi-monthly is every two months so the term is being used incorrectly.

Many graduate students get paid once a month (when I was in my Master's program we were paid every two weeks but in my PhD program they paid once a month). And I don't know how they do it now, but several years ago when I worked in IT The Bay's head office in Toronto was one of my clients and the people I dealt with there got paid monthly (and yes, they hated it).

Employment standards in every province require employees to be paid bi-weekly or more frequently. This is the law. Only contractors and self employed can be paid differently to this.

Re: Salary Frequency

I thought bi monthly was every two months and semi monthly which is also a term used here was every two weeks.

Until I moved to Canada I was always paid monthly. Never new any difference so being paid twice a month was a luxury

In terms of wages it's almost guaranteed to be "every 2 weeks".

I had a job a couple years ago in a hotel that got paid weekly, and on Wednesday instead of Friday, it was pretty sweet being paid every week.

Only job I have ever encountered to pay weekly, everywhere else has been bi-weekly or twice a month (15th and 30th).

Pay frequency seems to be the only labor standard related to pay that employers follow, I am amazed at how many I've worked for that flat out refuse to pay legitimate OT.

Every two weeks isnt the same as twice a month. There is an extra pay period or two if you are paid strictly every two weeks over the year.

Bimonthly is one of those strange words that can mean one of two things:

- every two months
- twice a month

I'm sure they mean that you will be paid twice a month.

Yep, joys of bi-weekly pay. This year for me anyhow Jan and August are 3 check months.

The various changes over the years made me a bit OCD about budgeting, which lead to the creation of multiple spreadsheets & a deeper understanding of Excel. Which was a bonus ;) I think.

I think it's a transatlantic variation. The term means twice a month in NA, but once every 2 months in the UK. NA "bi-weekly" is of course "once a fortnight" in the UK.

There are many such similar divergences such as "bill", "pavement" and best of all "pants"

When I started work here the HR girl said I would be paid Bi-weekly,
"oh every fortnight" I said,
she didn't have a clue what I meant and said " NO you will be paid Bi-weekly like everyone else"

What? No fanny?

I remember, shortly after we first moved to the US, having to run out into the yard to stop my wife from yelling "Here pussy pussy! Here pussy pussy!"

Ah, fortnight! One of the words to have completely disappeared from my vocabulary. Although I did hear it used by Ron McLean on Hockey Night In Canada recently so at least some Canadians must know what it means. Here in the US, I don't think I've ever heard it used and I'm pretty sure the vast majority would have no clue what it means.

+1. As mentioned earlier, I do get paid monthly, but I have a son who gets paid twice a month on the 1st and the 15th and not a lot. His rent etc., (for the full month), is due on the first, which means he gets short before the second pay check most months.

Another hit for the Bank of Dad. :frown:

I've got to save 1/2 my rent from my mid-month check, same boat as your son from the sounds of it. I could never make it from the 1st of the month, to the middle of the month paying rent all from one check...

Seems these days more money goes out, then comes in. I always have to skip something each month or just pay enough to keep them happy.
