Salary???
Hi,was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the cost of living in the Mississauga and surrounding area. The jobs I'm hoping for will pay about $4000Cad per month.
Is this enough to live off ?Could I afford rent, bills, food, car, insurance, tax and be able to enjoy myself ?? I'm hoping it is but any advice would be gratefully received    :) :) :) |

Re: Salary???
Stats Canada say that in 2001 for Missisagua
Average earnings (worked full year, full time ($)) ALL 48,792 MALE 55,694 FEMALE 39,516 That was 5 years ago now. Cost of living and housing in particular has gone up since then. We are all assuming that that is 4k gross a month, with deductions still to be taken. If it is, then a single person might be OK, although with little hope of purchasing there own place, but with dependents it would be no fun. What is the job? Have you checked what a Canadian would expect to be paid? Its not unheard of for employers to lowball on salary if they think you are desperate enough to take it in order to gt over here, although the need for a LMO helps moderate that to some extent. There are a few websites that might give some usefull info, they have been mentioned here before, but I can only think of monster / workopolis, and the HRDC labour market websites off the top of my head. There was another good one, just cant remember it now. |
Re: Salary???
The job Im going for is as a Truck mechanic at a freightliner dealer, and it looks like I might need a new plan because it not just me to support it my other half too!
Is there anywhere within travelling distance of Mississauga that cheaper to live????  |

As a truck mechanic, working for a national dealership ( Freightliner ) you should be getting MORE than that per week. If the stated figure of $1000 a week was a gross figure, you are right on the national avearage for income AFTER paying the required personal taxes and deductions from your pay. So if hundreds of thousands of Canadians are living on that net income, you should be able to do so too.

The current PLDs for those places are: Calgary $21/month Kingston $16 London $46 Mississauga/Halton Region $1,400 I think the message is that your money doesn't go as far in the GTA. |

Re: Salary???
Thanks for the info people it s defiantly appreciated, think I I'll have to look at the possibility of the other half getting a job(not sure how that will work as there's only me applying for a work permit) and try to get a higher monthly pay.

Re: Salary???
48k pa for a fully qualified truch mechanic seems a bit on the low side to me FWIW. If you are getting time charged out to customers at $70 per hour, I would think after overhead etc you would be getting mid to high 20s per hour..closer to 55 to 60k per year.
There is a chance that the HRDC labour market website has mechanics jobs and the rates historically offered on it. |
Re: Salary???

Re: Salary???
The job I'm trying for pays between $25 - $30 per hour,I was working off the lowest scale to see if it really enough to live on,I'll be aiming for $30 at the interview and hopefully get a little extra for having a truck drivers licence. There's also a productivity bonus scheme but thats not guaranteed every month, and some overtime that pays time+1/2 but not sure how much.
If I aim for $30 per hr ($1200 Week,$4800 month)Will this give me a better chance of a comfortable life???? :) :) (Remember $4800 per month will be to support x2 for the first few months) |

I've lived in Canada all my life and am now 60 . I can say with out any exaggeration that of ALL the people I know, dozens of couples, only ONE woman does not work outside their home, and she is a quadriplegic, in a wheel chair. If a couple has a very young child, under 2 or 3 years of age, perhaps the mother may stay home until the child goes to school, but after age 5 , why would she stay home ? That bit about "expectations' of Canadian society made me laugh out loud. Our expectations are to make as much money as possible and retire at age 50 like I did. Double incomes are the norm in Canada. Jim Bunting. Toronto. |

Double incomes are the norm in Canada. Jim Bunting. Toronto. I scan the room and I see half a dozen men working, I know they each have a wife at home baking and sewing, I have two. The tax system and the yesteryear attitudes of Canadian society make it less advantageous to have a second income than is the case in most countries and besides, there's a whole infra structure of spas and tennis clubs to be supported. |

Jim Bunting. Toronto. Why not pull your head in and respect others peoples opinions and experiences. If you have lived here your whole 60 years you have NO experience of relocating to canada so dont have personal experience of what immigrants can expect as an hourly rate. As far expectations within Canada there is a population of 30 million, are you seriously trying to tell us you know them all personally and what they want out of life? |
