Salaries for Occupations
Thought this link might be useful for those seeking to clarify their potential earnings in canada (assuming that they will be able to get the position they seek, and not withstanding the 'Canadian Experience' barrier!
Hope it helps. http://www.jobcanada.org/salary.html |
Re: Salaries for Occupations
Questions about money, is one thing you want to try and avoid during interviews !

Re: Salaries for Occupations
I couldn't find Teacher on there, there were ancilliary teaching jobs and kindergarten teachers, but not teacher as in secondary school. I'm thinking of this as a possible fallback position if I don't stay in IT. Am I just blind or is it under something other than Teacher ?

Re: Salaries for Occupations
I've had a good look and secondary / high school teacher is not there. But I did like the category 'mentally impaired teacher'. I came across quite a few of those in my time in the DfES.

Re: Salaries for Occupations
Good pm: If you look under secondary school teacher you will find the relevant details....but I think the top end of scale is not high enough (for Ontario anyways!) Have been reading the forum for a few months but this is my first posting. I am Canadian and my OH is English...we're thinking of moving to Ontario next year. It has been quite an eye opener to see how others view Canadian systems eg. education/healthcare as well as Canucks. Hopefully I'll will be able to make mostly positive contributions to the forum.

Welcome to the forum, canucklehead. :) You may notice that willmore is often cross, but she's a sweetie, really. Don't be put off by her.
I'm sure that 'secondary school teacher' has been added since I last looked! |
Re: Salaries for Occupations
Cheers Canucklehead, :) I would have sworn I looked under that too, so either I am blind (not impossible) or it has been added. The salary figure for low, would give me a better income than in my last IT job, assuming $1 gives £1 or purchasing power!

I hear teaching generally pays badly at first, but improves with a few years experience, at least thats how its structured in ontario. Typically starts in high $30k to low $40k, and moves up to 50s/ 60s after a few years. Unfortunately experience in other areas (eg engineering) is not rewarded, so a friend of mine is taking a big drop in income cos he decided he wanted to teach technology. Not sure how foreign experience is regarded, but I suspect a canadian BEd is required by most boards, and that can be expensive to get. |

I was thinking I'd be best retrain in Canada, so I wouldn't need to worry about converting a UK qualification, but yes the cost may be an issue. As I say I'm considering it as a fall back plan and I do have a few other ideas if IT doesn't work out. Thanks to this forum I'm well aware of how the job market goes in Canada, so I'm making like a good Scout and being prepared! :) Simon |
Re: Salaries for Occupations
That is interesting. It says legal secretaries earn $35,000 in Regina. I don't think that is enough to entice me back to work, particularly as most of the time I did the same work as the lawyers and they got paid a bit more than $35,000!
I think I'll stay home and play on the Internet instead. |

Re: Salaries for Occupations
Good am: Thanks for the welcome all. Teaching secondary in Hastings-Prince District School (where Iainuk lives and my former stomping grounds) teaching salaries range from $42,302 for zero years experience and a 4 year degree plus 1 year BEd. to £76,014 for 11 years experience and an additional qualifications course "Honours Specialist" in your subject. The benefits package is very generous especially pension provision. The job market is very tight in most subjects (except perhaps French) as teaching is a very popular profession and entry to teaching training courses is very competitive compared to the UK. For more info on teaching in Ontario check out www.oct.ca (Ontario College of Teachers) I taught secondary for 7 years in Northumberland county before moving to the UK several years ago...definitely prefer teaching in Ontario :D Watch this space !
Best wishes. Canucklehead |
Re: Salaries for Occupations
At the end of the day ( such a cliche' ), it's not so much about the money, when you first move to a new counrty like Canada, but getting that all elusive first job, that will give you some work experience to put on your RESUME !
When we first came here, all I had was UK experience and UK degrees to go with it, no one wanted to know, even though there were a few interviews and all that, you can see that they were thinking how that was going to fit into a canadian culture. Eventually the job came, after some perseverance, and since then, the phone still rings every now and then, with employers asking if am still looking for work, and that they have a position that they think am qualified for, with salaries starting at 45-50k, am having to turn these down, as am happy doing what am doing, even though am having to take a laptop home ( you can see it in the photopost on my desk ), that make people get hold of me, even after office hours. Being able to work in an environment that makes use of things that are of interest to me, makes it all worthwhile. Mind you, it wasn't that easy, I was sent to various casual jobs by an agency when we first came over ( since am not the type to sit on my wotsit ), so have been there done all that shift stuff. Don't know about the link above, but for what I do, the entry-level salary is 50k in Toronto with stock options and benefits, but if one partner already has benefits at their job, there is no point in the other person taking out that option ( for us anyway ). So for all those people saying they are going to re-train in something else, there is no point if that career doesn't include work placement, especiall with IT, I will say don't do it, if a company takes you on and are willing to send you on one ( which most do ), then fine. On the job front, I heard from someone that CANADA POST are hiring in the GTA area, with pay starting at $20.09/hr, JUST DROP YOUR RESUME into one of their plants, but do note that there is a test they make you do. Those on permanent contracts earn more than that, and you imagine how much they make in a year. Mr Smith |
