Yep. People have lost an average of 15 - 20 percent. Still a good investment though given the tax deferral benefits - at least for high income earners.

On the bright side, if you need to cash out your investment, in part or in whole, you can pull out less from the pot, so the government collects less taxes.

That would be RIF's MM: and probably wouldn't have most of your RIF's in equities anyway

For RIF's I agree, they would be more suited to low risk bonds, GIC's.

But whatever the market loss, on redemption, the government will share in the pain.
