Return to nursing courses in Vancouver, BC?
 

Hi folks,

Situation is as follows.....

1992 Registered General Nurse
1993 Registered Midwife
1998 BSc in Health Studies
1999 Pharmaceutical sales / nurse advisor with GlaxoSmithKline
2008 3M Safety Solutions (no relation to nursing at all..but such a good laugh so let nursing and midwifery registration lapse....ooops)
2011 Resigned from 3M :( and moved to Vancouver as a permanent resident !!!! :D

Have had an epiphany and looking to return to nursing but not quite sure which way to go.....

As I see it I have at least 2 hurdles....I wasnt trained in BC and Ive let my registration lapse. Surely I don't need to start again...do I?

Ps I'm in South Surrey

Any pointers would be very much appreciated :D

usually college asks for refresher course if more than 5 years has passed but probably best to ask college

I'm a RN in Vancouver, I think that the CRNBC will have all your answers. They have a website & are located on Arbutus St. Probably when you apply for registration, the NMC will send the CRNBC details of your file. You may have to write to your nursing school to have your transcripts sent to CRNBC to see if you need any updates.

I'm doing the reverse at the moment, applying to the NMC for registration. Timely process indeed...

My daughter ploughed through that earlier this year. She was quite peeved that she, who was born in Canada and is fluent in English and French, had to take an English test, while her partner, born in Italy and a speaker of fractured English, did not. She was even more peeved to find that she had to take classes in dealing with multicultual clients; this after growing up in Toronto.

Not in some posters eyes there was no doubt.
Im beginning to get the hang of these threads and certain BE posters.
The seasoned veterans with thousands of posts/replies and members of the BE clicks can by virtue of this brotherhood make whatever comments they like on this board to any poster or act like some kind of BE God or King.
Strange when they engage in threads that are relevant to them but another poster questions them they get in a huff or have a hissy fit.

Dish it out where you can but have the decency to accept it back.

Thanks all. Seems that its going to be a longer (and more expensive) process than I thought. Trying to get through to the CRNBC(phone lines constantly busy)to ask these questions but it seems looking at the application package that Ill have to pay $560 for them to assess my case before I can even start a course according to their website. The course 'I think' is about a year long :unsure:

Perhaps Ill stick with sales after all :(

Hi!

There are definately return to nursing courses. They hold them in Kwantlen University in Surrey (I think they are moving site to Langley next year for nursing). Maybe you could contact Kwantlen student services and ask for some advice re: cost etc? They're really helpful, or at least I've found them to be.
It's such a lengthy process trying to get registered here. I started the process in August 2010 while I was still in the UK (so much easier to get your transcripts while you're still there, once you move you have practically no chance!) and I now have to wait to do a course in Kwantlen which is not until May 2012.
It's costing $5,000 as I'm a PR living in Langley now, I think it's $15,000 for international students. That doesn't even begin to count the cost that I've had having to do things for the CRNBC, and it always just seems to be one thing after another.
Good luck with it all, it should definately be worth trying as nurses are on good money here. If you need any help with any of the process, don't hesitate to give me a shout.

Thanks so much for that! Yes...it's a very lengthy process and expensive $5000 eek!!!. Since you are going through it all just now, what are you able to do in the meantime until may?

It's a very lengthy process indeed, and I'm sure there's probably more expense to come even after the course... taking the CRNE, registering etc.
At the moment I'm working on reception in a spa, and before that I was working in Shoppers Drug Mart in Langley. I tried to get regular reception work but no one would take me because I had Registered Nurse on my resume. I learnt the hard way, but the best thing to do is take your registered nurse qualification off your resume as no one would give me a job as they all said I would just leave once I'd landed a nursing position. Have you managed to find work yet?

Interview on Monday....sales again. Yes I was thinking the same particularly because I'm not still registerd. Prob not going to bother as I've spoken to crnbc and they think I 'may' have to start a nursing degree....I already have a degree...no thanks.
I seem over qualified for some jobs ive applied for and as you have found out they are reluctNt to entertain you cos you may leave when something better comes along. Hhhhhmmmm what to do?
My friend in the uk was out of nursing for 18 years in the uk and did a uk return to nursing course...took her 4 months and she was PAID £1000 for the privilege.
