Default Resume help

We have just submitted our PR visa so we have a long way to go before we can move out to Canada. However we have both talked about trying to get temporary work visas so we can move earlier. I understand that Canada has a different format for their resumes. Has anyone got any advice on where we can get help on making our Resumes really stand out. This may be either a great book or a company who specialises in this area or work. Also has anyone advice on how to best approach a company as I appreciate most will not be overly enthusiastic about employing someone needing a temp visa.

I am a town planner and quite lucky that my professional organisation in the UK has a reciprocal agreement with the Canadian equivalent that makes it easier for me to qualify in Canada. My husband is a management accountant working for a large food company. We would eventually like to settle in Nova Scotia but don't know if we may be better off starting in Alberta first.

Hi there,

I think a good starting point is to find out whether prospective employers will employ you based on recognition of UK qual's. Or, would they expect you to gain parity through the formal recognition proces for those qual's within the workings of the Canadian reciprocating body, before they employ you (or even talk to you, such can be the protectionism and beaurocracy involved). For example MOH had to obtain professional recognition for her UK nursing training, get references, transcripts, police checks, JD's, etc, before being allowed to seek employment, employers wouldn't even speak to her ! Once past that 9 month sorting out stage seeking work was then actually very easy and ended up being a multiple choice kind of thing.

You can find out about certification/reciprocity (sp?) by a few calls/letters/emails to prospective employers, or through e-networking with people who have made similar moves. So, you'll need to get talking to employers to find out where you stand to make the next steps. Sometimes this can all move frighteningly quickly or it can be like pulling teeth ! Just persevere.

AB or NS ? Wow what a choice, and what a difference ? Guess it depends if you find the dream job (or a job), and how things pan out. AB is growing like crazy hence the demand for skills but on the other hand other areas are too across Canada and sometimes you get more committment from a smaller locale as they're more grateful to get someone of substance and experience etc. And don't knock a smaller place with more stable lower growth economy albeit not as booming as AB.

You either focus on one specific place and move heaven and earth to get there or you go with the flow, where the work is and make the most of it.

I'd suggest doing a lot more reasearch on the provinces and various areas so you can narrow down the angle a bit. Flexibility will help, and absolute tenacity and willpower to keep on trying, communicating, checking things out most certainly helps. A lethargic response from regulatory bodies and employers doesn't mean the skills aren't in high demand, things just move differently in Canada !

NB there are many people here with diverse skills who have been recruited from lands afar on temorary visas, with a combo of dedication, good presentation, motivation and perseverance. Hope you can become one of them. Oh and many of these will lead to PR or employer sponsored PNP.

Good luck,

Rich.

In addition to whatever you can find in the archive here (and there are examples etc there if you look, as well as usefull links), remember if you are intending to email them out to this side of the pond set the page size to "Letter" . No A4 here, and converting to print on letter size will royally mess up any formatting.

how i did mine was the following:
name, address and email, tel number
job objective
i am a motivated , enthusiastic and confident individual who is responsive to change and innovation and would relish a role that develops my practice and strives for continuous quality improvement blah! blah!
skill highlights for example, communication, teamwork, IT
professional experience
education
community service
hobbies/interests
no more than 2 pages
it is a north american model and do a cover letter summarising your resume. treat it as a sales document not a life history thing!

Get hold of the book "What Color Is Your Parachute".

You will have to order it from Amazon (US) to get the latest version. It deals with the whole process of searching for a job. Chapter 1 may make you want to put the book down, but carry on through and you will have answers to all your questions.

After that the world wide web is full of agencies and phone directories to find all company relevant to your chosen career path.
