Repeat prescriptions & regular bloods etc

Hi,

My partner and I have a number of tablets we use via repeat prescription which in the UK we pick up monthly. My partner also requires regular blood test to monitor levels of drug in blood. I believe getting a doctor straight away maybe an issue. Has anyone experienced this problem and how did you get around it to keep up supply of key prescriptions and health checks when first arrive in Canada?

Appreciate your help

Kind Regards

Julie

Bring your medical history with you if you can.

A canadian doctor at an ugent care / walk in clinic will probably happily write a repeat script for you, plus give you the forms to get the blood tests done as required at the local medical lab as is the norm for blood tests here (in Ontario anyway)

Paying for it is the trick...the blood tests are covered by OHIP (after the wait period)..the drugs and Px charges are not.

What do I need to ask my doctor for a letter or copy of my notes or something else?

Tell him you are emigrating and ask him how best to bring your medical history with you. Canada is pretty much in the dark ages regarding electronic record keeping, so a copy of your notes would probably be the best solution, especially if you are likely to be without a regular GP at first.

Where are you off too anyway? In the big cities finding a GP shouldnt be as hard...

We are off to Toronto probably living downtown for short time until Christmas in company apartment on College and Bloor and then moving to own play over the holidays. We like the High park area so will probably end up there. So we have initial period and change quite quickly. I thought though that doctor shortage was general but happy if in GTA if I won't have that issue?

Thanks for help

You'll have no difficulty finding a GP in Toronto. Also, good choice re High Park.

I got my doctor in the UK to give me a prescription for three months worth of my tablets before I came out, then there was not as much of a panic to find a doctor straightaway.

I also have to have regular blood tests and again I had one done just before I came out so that would give me a bit of time to sort out a doctor and where to go for blood tests etc, once I got here.
