renting with pets

Is it generally difficult to find places to rent in Ontario if family has one dog?

How big is the dog? For how long? Where in Ontario? Are you a family or on your own?

Dog is smallish sized mix breed (looks like a shiba inu). Long lease eg 1-2years. Looking for rental home in smaller community 1-2 hours outside of Toronto. Family (me, my wife and 3 kids).

Hi. When are you looking to rent, ie. (month/year)?
To be honest I can't see a problem with renting with just the one dog.
I take it work is not an issue, insofar as you where you live, or is that the critera 1-2 hours outside of Toronto?
Might be able to help, or not. Need more info.

Have not really decided when to make permanent move to Canada. Work is not an issue. Just looking for a nice smallish town but not too far from Toronto. Not sure whether landlords there are generally dog-unfriendly. Any anecdotal experience ?? OH is really worried about not being able to bring dog across.

Re: renting with pets

We are also coming over with a dog, a black lab. Plus wife and 2 kids. We were over last week on a reccie, looking at Oakville/Milton versus Barrie.

In Oakville/Milton we were very restricted with a dog for rentals, most stipulated no pets. Our realtor told us we could try to negiotiate by offering an additional damage deposit.

In Barrie the pet stipulation wasn't there, but there was very little for rent. In that area aswell because a lot of the houses we were looking at were pretty rural they didn't have fenced back yards. We were told to check out the electronic fences and popped into Petsmark in town, having spoken to staff and other customers about it we have decided to give that a go. For what we want it will cost about £200 and take about 4 hours to install(loads of digging).

We decided while we were over that we really liked some of the outlying villages from Barrie and will be moving there in August.

Hope some of that helps.

Chris

We came a couple of years ago and rented for a year with a dog (German Shepherd) Although there were a number of places that wouldn't take him , most were open to negotiation and I think we committed to repair any damage he caused. In the end there was none and all was OK. Use a realtor to do the rental for you and they will be happy to negotiate on the pet question.
