Renting in or around Halifax NS
Does anyone have any links or contacts to house rentals in the Halifax NS area? +- 30 miles. Or indeed has anyone tried this and what were the results? We're after a family house rather than an apartment and would like a bit of land with it. Also, any advice on our chances of renting with pets (2 dogs/2cats). Oh, and maybe even costs if anyone knows any.
All info very much appreciated.

We saw millenium, they uttered something about no pets in most of the places we saw. The herald may be your best bet.

Hi,
www.tivertons.ca always have a lot. the www.herald.ns.ca has alot (even though the agencies often put what look to be private adverts in there also and the same property can be up with more than one agent. We managed to save a bit on the rent (a friend saved a whopping $500/month negotiating because they signed up for a 3 year contract-here with the navy). MOst people wont take less than a year lease, we were lucky and found somewhere for 6 months. As far as I am aware most people will accept dogs and cats, even in condos.
http://www.executive-rentals.net/ these guys dont put prices on their site so its a bit annoying, they want you to ring up and find out and they are quite expensive. Some properties have been up for rent for a while so there may be some negotiating that way.
good luck with the search. we got a really nice house through a friend of a friend and then the next day it appeared on a agency website and there is no way i would have viewed it based on the pictures, didnt do it justice, so be open minded about the properties, they always look better with furniture in than empty!

Above are links to good rental sites here in Halifax. The top 2 are agencies and although they have a good selection of properties they charge a premium. The herald would be your best bet, many ads will be direct for Landlords and I'm sure you will find plenty who would take a shorter lease.
When we first arrived we rented a lovely home on the Northwest Arm direct with the landlord and saved close to $400 per month on the price that an agency had it up for. A shorter lease may cost a little more though.
Another alternative is http://www.premieresuites.com/halifax/halifax.asp although nice it will eat away at your budget (if you have one)
Areas are a personal choice and it really depends on what you are looking for. Of course there are some areas to avoid (PM me and I'll pass them on) The best move we made when we landed in Halifax was to rent close to town, it's where everything happens, your close to it all, the lack of commute is a blessing and living in or close to town here is nothing like living in a city in the UK!!
PM for further info

Above is my original respone to an earlier poster in thread identified by Ziggy. Prices vary here so much and you have to negotiate hard in order to get a good deal.
Our rental was a 4 bed with a sizable yard on the outskirts of downtown. Above average condition for a rental and they accepted our cats without any hesitation all for $1750 per month. We chose to pay a higher than average price based on the house location and the fact it met with our requirements at that time.
PM for pics if you wish.

Thanks for all the replies. Prices appear to be similar to the UK (dependent on area). The real issue was going to be the dogs and cats. I'm not bothered about being near town. Indeed 30 minutes out would probablly be a lot better. I found a nice place one on one of the sites identified for $1400 a month. 3 bed on the waterfront. Out of town too. It looks perfect. Mind you seing is believing as they say. Are the properties through the agents negotiable on price? We took £50 a month less than the agents were asking when we let ours.
