Renting with 3 Huskies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,

We are due to move over next May to Lethbridge AB. Our main problem converning us most is being able to rent with our 3 Huskies, I just wondered if anyone has any similar experience and any useful advice, also I understand we also need a special license as we have 3 dogs, again any useful advice on where to acquire said license in Lethbridge would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys

Sorry to tell you but finding somewhere to rent with your three Huskies will not be an easy task.

Hi thanks Auld Yin, I'm expecting it to be hard but there must be somewhere we can rent, they are well behaved dogs and there must be someone else who has moved with 3 dogs, hI hope :D

Re: Renting with 3 Huskies

Hi there. Are you planning to rent long term or just short term until you find a house to buy? We have friends that only rented short term until they found sometime to buy so left their pets in UK with family until they were in their own place then had them flown over. If you're looking for a long term rental then you may find it more difficult to find somewhere that will accept three dogs. That said, it shouldn't be impossible, it will just limit your options. Again, we do have friends that have a dog and are in rented accommodation. We were fortunate when we moved over with our dog (she came on the same flight as us) as we stayed initially on our realtor's acreage and she was happy for us to have our dog (and cat) there.

I don't know the "rules" in Lethbridge with regard to how many dogs you are allowed to have etc. Here in Cochrane we are allowed up to three dogs (each must be licensed) - we are now up to two dogs! I believe you are allowed more than three if you already have more when you move into the town or if they are under a certain age (ie. your dog has had pups). We get our general dog licenses from the town office (council building). I'm guessing the same would be the case in Lethbridge and probably the place where you would need to obtain any possible special licence for having "extra" dogs.

Hope it all works out for you and you find a nice dog friendly place to rent. All the best.

Hello Thornes, thanks so much for your post, we are only renting for as long as ot takes to get a mortgage for our house.
We have considered the possibility of myself moving over first until we can buy and then my wife joining us with our dogs although it would be our last option.
We have no family who could look after our 3 back home so unfortunately that is out too. The laws in Lethbridge allow 2 dogs licensed per house, if you have 3 or 4 then you need a
"Dog Fancier's" license. I am hoping there is some allowance for having 3 dogs upon first moving as surely you can't be expexted to move and leave them behind.
We are visiting Lethbridge again in July so I hope to get more info then.
Thanks again, take care

We came to Calgary in 2007 with two Rotties and, prior to our arrival, found it impossible to rent with large dogs. In the end, I came over for a house buying trip, bought the house and booked our landing trip to land the day before we took possession. I had sourced a hotel that was happy to accommodate our dogs for the night.

However, our flight was delayed for 24 hours so, in the end, we landed the day we took possession and moved straight in.

The other issue you will have is the fact that you only want the rental for a short period of time. Think about it, what is in it for the landlord?

I wish you all the best but suspect you will struggle to find what you are after.

We have one dog (an Airedale) and found it really hard to find anywhere.
Fortunately we found somewhere in the end, but your options will be extremely limited. In a smaller market like Lethbridge, I think you're gonna struggle.

An option might be to contact some of the landlords who say "no pets", but offer to pay a higher rent/damage deposit.

Re: Renting with 3 Huskies

Why don't you rent furnished for a month or two, and put the dogs in boarding kennels?

No suggestions on teh dogs - I'm afraid I don't have any, nor a place to rent but welcome to Lethbridge.

Do you know where in town you're thinking of living?

Re: Renting with 3 Huskies

No worries. Shame you're not moving to Cochrane as you could have stayed in our guest suite with your dogs!!! My daughter loves huskies! Anyway, getting a mortgage over here never seems to take long it seems so hopefully you won't have to rent for long.

A Dog Fancier's Licence? That is so funny - I've heard it all now! Just looked at the town of Lethbridge's website. Looks like you get the Dog Fancier's Licence from the Animal Shelter.

Best of luck!! :fingerscrossed:

Thanks AC, ideally we'd love to be able to buy ready to move straight into but with the state of the exchange rate and housing market where I live that's just not going happen unfortunately.

I do take your point regarding short term rentals but we hope the landlord may see it as not long for the dogs to cause any damage, not that they would anyway :)

Thanks again for the well wishes though

No worries Caitilin, thanks for the welcome. We like all the areas pretty much but we are starting to favour the West of Lethbridge as of all the houses our Realtor sends us to look at the ones we like most are in the West, plus having visited we liked the look of the area around the university, Paradise Canyon etc.

I take it you live in Lethbridge then

Thanks again

Re: Renting with 3 Huskies

Jericho, thanks for that useful advice re contacting the landlords with a higher deposit, might be our only way.

Tuppence, thanks for the suggestion though we couldn't do that to our dogs, leaving them in kennels for 1 to 2 months isn't an option for us.......hopefully.

The Thornes, thanks again, yeah I have to laugh at the "dog Fancier" name for a license, who thinks of these things :rofl:
We'll know more after our visit in July hopefully, hopefully we can buy our own place pretty soon. Thanks for the offer of your guest suite tho, you never know we may need to take you up on it
