Default Renters Insurance

Is it common to have renters insurance in Canada or specifically BC when you are the tenant? Trying to figure out if we need it.

Any recommendations of good insurers or comparison sites? Seems to be a huge lack of comparison sites out here - biz opportunity for any budding entrepreneurs out there

It's very common and some landlords insist on it. Insurance typically is bought either through a broker or direct through the company.

You can compare insurance here:

Yes, it is. Many landlords will ask for proof. I have RBC's tenant insurance.

Its worth getting as landlords insurance will not cover your personal items or protect you from liability. I've never had a landlord insist on it, but I always have it for peace of mind.

I used a company called Square One, 18 per month, its really some of the cheapest insurance around, and I didn't find much difference in rates, most companies were within 2 dollars.

I would have used RBC as I bank with them, but they insisted my postal code and address does not exist, so they would not sell it to me.

Excellent, thanks for the info. We've never been asked and have nothing worth stealing but you mention a good point which is liability.

Will get some this weekend.

I would suggest you get it as you never know what is around the corner and people have come unstuck for not having it. A good example is a friend of my sisters went out to work came home to discover place he rented had burnt down, he literally and no stuff and no where to live and spent 6 months staying on peoples couches till he could afford to set his life up again.

There must be some way that could work in your favour. Take a big overdraft or something and deny all knowledge of it. It couldn't be you as they say you don't exist there.
