We will be renting when we move next year just wondering if we need to bring any documents with us as we will have no references as we would have never rented before in Canada. Just wondering what they would accept.

We're just in the process of applying for our first rental here and I wasn't sure what they would be looking for but I brought with me basic references from our last two landlords in the uk. They are very standard reference letters, if you google 'landlord reference' you'll find some examples of what should work. It basically says the dates we stayed there and that we caused no problems, treated the place with respect etc. One landlord - an agency rather than an individual - also sent a payment schedule showing we'd made all our rent payments.

Of course if you've never rented then I'm not sure what would work....

i never showed either of my landlords any documents here...just filled in the applications and that was that!

oh that's good news..we have looked at a few applications online to rentals just to see what information we would need to put and all we can fill in would be our names as it asks for work numbers and work names and references earnings etc. We will be living of our savings until my hubby gets a job..

It really depends on the landlord I think. Some advertise saying references essential, others don't seem to need anything. We had one possible landlord get very antsy when we didn't have jobs, but others understand our situation and are happy with it. Good luck!

We have just secured a rental to with an agency, they asked for references and when I gave them my uk landlord details, they asked if I knew anyone in canada to give me one, I gave them a friends details and they called him, ive only met him twice, lol but they didnt seem that bothered.

Same here. Got the keys the same day.
PS. We rented through an agency.
