Renewing PR

Can anyone advise on renewing your PR after the first 5 Years.

1.) Does the time spent in Canada on your first PR count towards Citizenship or do you have to start again ?

2.) Applying - Seems you can do it online (see link on 3.)

3.) Fee’s. I found the following link below. They seem expensive they are in line with what you pay when you are applying for PR. Are these correct ?

Many thanks.

Re: Renewing PR

Once you have PR, that's it (unless you lose it due to not spending enough time in Canada)- you dont need to renew it.

Cheers Fellow Manc,

Dont you have to renew the card after 5 years then ? I'm sure mine has an "expiry date"

Assuming you dont make the required 2 years in 5, does your previous PR card become null and void and you would have to start the hole "immigration process" again ?

Can't comment on the first point, but on the second, yes, if you lose PR by virtue of not having enough residency then you do have to apply all over again.

Thanks AX,
Thats always been my understanding but worthwhile confirming. Given that Mechanical Engineers are no longer on the Skilled Worker list whereas Restaurant Managers are ! I'm pretty much screwed on re-applying basis :frown:

If you have an expiry date, are you sure you dont just have a TWP, and not a PR?

PS- People physically correcting others' spelling mistakes.... GRRRR:frown:

Do you have citizenship jericho? If not I would advise you to check your PR card they do indeed have expiry dates of 5 years. ;) (just checked mine to make sure)

1: Its probably too long ago to count...citizenship only looks at time in canada over the last 4 years only, so it would depend on the time frame.

2: Dont see why not, if that what it says

3: I figured citizenship would pay for itself over two PR card renewals... not to mention cheaper passport options as a result.

As AX said, if you dont have the paltry 2 years out of five you basically forfeit your rght to live in canada and have to start from scratch again.

Jerico, you PR status does not expire, but the PR card you (arguably) need to travel back and forth is only valid for five years and needs to be renewed to simplify international air/ coach travel.

As long as you dont intend to travel there is no requirement to have a current PR card as far as I'm aware...

LOL, I have my citizenship app sitting here, waiting to be sent off. Just need to get my ass into gear and have my mugshot done (the app has been sitting here for 2 months now :o )

Cheers, Iaink on Point 1.)

I'm still not unsure on my 2nd point. In terms of getting your "new, i.e 2nd PR Card. Do you have to pay, typically as per the prices quoted on the link, which for a family of 4 is circa $1200.

Anyone done this ?

I have no intention of being in a position that I couldn't travel if I needed too. Been there done that when I lost my passport. Worst month of my life here thus far!

Well, as a british passport holder you can still travel if need be anyawy, as you can get on the plane back to canada on the strength of your british visa waiver passport.

You can either go the officially sanctioned $50 travel document route, or just throw yourself on the mercy of the officer at reentry, using the old PR card and or paper ROL form to establish your right of entry and explain you thought you would have had your citizenship through by then....they can check that in the system I would think ;)
