Relocation Package how to?

Hi,
Firstly, thanks to all veteran forum users for providing such a wealth of information including the Wki pages. You’ve reduced my questions down by almost 90%! Also, great banter all around!
Anyway, I’ve recently agreed an exit strategy from my current employer in UK for end of April, effectively giving me 6 months to find a job. My wife and I have always dreamed of visiting Canada, so last year we spent 2 weeks in and around Toronto/Niagra and then Vancouver.
Heck, we loved it so much in Vancouver that now Our dream is to live there for 2 years or so (before our daughter starts school). luckily there is a sister company (under same parent organisation) that have their head office out there. So I’ve held back asking for advice before I heard back from them. Now I’ve now been invited to work there for a week and essentially sell myself and the role I would do since they don’t technically have funding or Job to offer me but need my expertise.
Question:
With a HTB mortgage, young baby, dog and of course wife to worry about, I need to make sure the salary (and possibly relocation) package meets our expectations. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach this subject with the employer and what’s reasonable based on your own experiences (FYI it’ll be a Logistics Project Manager type role).
I’ve already started looking into Visas and process of moving everyone and most things over, but if anyone has some advice that would be great!
cheers, Alex

Re: Relocation Package how to?

If you are going to work there for a week, so long as you are an employee of the UK company on a 'consulting' basis, paid by the UK company and not an employee of the Canadian company, should not be an issue without a work visa. If it is deemed work for the Canadian company you will need a visa or WP to work, even for a day.

If you get moving costs, any lump sum payment paid in advance will be taxable and the moving expenses not deductible. If the company pay the moving costs directly to the moving companies, or if you pay the costs, get receipts and they reimburse you afterwards, also should be OK.

Maybe be sure you can get a visa before arranging to exit your current job, otherwise you may find yourself out of work if you cannot get a visa.
Get an accountant to advise on your tax situation. Tax returns have to be filed every year, between January 1 and April 15.

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Yes I will be employed by my current UK employer during this 1WK trip and will work on a consultancy basis.
Perhaps I should have explained, my decision to leave current role was independent of the desire move to Canada. I’ve set myself a deadline of Jan-1 to secure an offer to kick off the LMIA and WP process, otherwise I’ll have 4 months to secure work in London and stay in UK.

You do realise that you are moving to possibly THE most expensive place to live in Canada?

Vancouver may be beautiful, and those of us who live here generally love it BUT it is almost impossible for a young couple with children to find housing to buy or rent. Not only that but daycare costs are also very high, if your wife was hoping to work.

That needs very serious consideration as many people find that salaries are not high enough to allow them to live in Vancouver, or even within relatively easy commute considering that public transit is not as easy or as good as in the UK

Re: Relocation Package how to?

Thanks scilly, you’re right and I am well aware of the difficulties locals face due to the shortage of supply in affordable accommodation. Having viewed a number of spend comparison sites/posts, its definitely at front of mind and is a potential blocker if we can’t make this trip worthwhile. Nonetheless, I’m keen to do as much research and prepare the best I can so I know exactly what to ask for when I head out there. My wife is not planning to work so child care won’t be necessary.
I’m looking for 3bed house in zone 2 or 3 bear the metro stations so that I can still commute by train which seems pretty simple since the HQ is near commercial broadway, so 2 lines are available. Also the monthly season ticket is a quarter of what I pay here for a similar journey!

Re: Relocation Package how to?

so ............... in Zone 2, you are probably looking at between $3,000 and $5,000 a month for a 3 bed single family house, possibly a little less if you go for a townhouse. Zone 3 MIGHT be a little less but certainly not down to $2,000

Most buildings near the Skytrain stations (NOT metro!) are now high rise apartments or condos ................ single family homes and 3-4 storey walk-ups are being rapidly bought by developers and demolished as the priority of Metro Vancouver mayors and councils is to concentrate high rises around the Skytrain stations.

The other option is to look at the North Shore .......... especially North Vancouver which is cheaper than West Vancouver. No Skytrain, but good bus service over the bridges to Vancouver or to Lonsdale Quay and the Seabus. But you would still be looking at about the same price.

The other problem is that, while all this development around the stations is going on, facilities are not being built at the same rate .......... so libraries, community centres, even parks and play areas may be a long way away, not to mention schools. That means your wife might be isolated with the young'un.

Ok, so perhaps the properties listed for $2000 on Craig’s list are scams or in undesirable locations, but I have found a few. It’ll be really tough to be picky about perfect house and best price when I’m out of the country. I’m sure others have been through this process and have your organisations been supportive ie first 3 months rent covered?
Living in a new development in UK, we know what it’s like having to get in the car and driving 15 mins for everything (even walking the dog). But you’re right, isolation is a big problem for us and we want to avoid it as much as possible. How about Surrey, perhaps driving or cycling to Skyline station, would a house for 2.5-3k pm for 2 bed (preferably furnished) be realistic?
thanks

A furnished property would be a hotel suite or an AirBnb. It's easy enough to google for the price of those. It's not usual to find long term rental furnished properties in Canada.

I think the idea that one parent could stay at home is nice. I don't remember the last time I heard of a couple having that arrangement. Certainly my daughter in Vancouver who has two small children and a working husband would not be able to maintain her lifestyle (bicycle, car share, too small apartment) without having a job.

Re: Relocation Package how to?

Thank you all for the constructive feedback, the discussion has veered off slightly from the core question which is how I can negotiate a salary and relocation package to allow me to have a similar lifestyle I have in UK in Vancouver. Essentially, what I’m hearing is that it may not be achievable because businesses can’t match the living costs for most young couples predominantly due to sky high rental prices and lack of availability.
I’m going to put a budget plan together based on as much research as I can get and negotiating my salary from there. If it doesn’t meet my expectations, then now isn’t the right time in my career to make the move and I’ll keep working in UK till the right opportunity arises. Thanks again.

In all honestly, if you've gone to them asking for a job, and they're having to pay to sponsor you already, I think your chances of a good relocation package in this day and age are pretty low.

Great relocation packages still exist, but they're usually for people with specialist skills who are headhunted, and who the company really, really wants and is prepared to pay to get. If that's you, then you'd usually know it, as you'll already have been headhunted by other companies.

Re: Relocation Package how to?

I'm doubtful about the negotiation of salary and relocation package, especially here in Vancouver, and for waht you seem to thinking of as "short term" as against a permanent move.

Living anywhere in the Lower Mainland is expensive, and as dbd33 said, furnished properties are not common, and in any case would be much more expensive that $2000 a month!

The most critical shortage in accommodations here is family sized rentals at an affordable price, ie 3 or more bedrooms and under $4,000-5,000 a month.

Re: Relocation Package how to?

I wonder if similar advice would be given to anyone relocating from Vancouver to London where there’s a similar problem with housing but perhaps salaries are slightly higher.
From what I’m reading, the main barrier to entry is accommodation and my situation being temporary/forced which effectively means I shouldn’t expect any relocation package. This does mean that I’d have to consider applying for some sort of sponsorship from the parent company to assist with the move (although I’m not sure if that would be possible). I’m also lowering my expectations and settling for 2bed ground floor apartment (with garden) or smaller house as I’ve only one child. I’m also weighing up the cost of running an extra car and living further away (ie Langley), vs living in close proximity to Skytrain station and only running the one car for my wife.

Re: Relocation Package how to?

The same advice may be given to those going the other way, but Vancouver is consistently much higher than London in the 'most expensive housing' tables, so that's another factor. Maybe the best thing to do is work out your likely salary and work back from there to see if it's feasible. What's your NOC code, any idea? Does this one match up with your job? 1215 Supervisors, supply chain, tracking and scheduling co-ordination occupations

It's also worth working out if you think it's worth it if the company won't help with the relocation expenses, you're looking at a huge chunk of money (this thread has some useful examples in, although it's quite out of date now, so do add a bit on for costs of living rises since then - https://britishexpats.com/forum/cana...canada-735341/), so would you be happy to fund it yourself if needed? If not, then it may be a non starter, but if you can start doing some calculations and work out whether or not you think it's worth it, that may help. No point in wasting the company's or your time with a trip out there if it's not feasible anyway, particularly as it's only for a couple of years (and then of course, you'd need to spend similar to come back).

Re: Relocation Package how to?

I got a relocation package from my company when I transferred from UK to Canadian operation. Should be noted that this was a permanent move:

1) Up to 1 month temporary accommodation in a furnished short term rental apartment (the level downtown)
2) Payment for flights for me and my wife
3) Coverage of all immigration/visa/permit fees
4) Tax filings for me and my wife in our first year in Canada and last year in the UK (didn't require UK as PAYE)
5) Relocation allowance of $5,000 (this was paid as a salary uplift so was taxable)
