Regulated occupation

Hey guys,

This is purely information gathering as I am not in this position at present, but see it as something I may need to know for the not too distant future.

What do you do when your profession is regulated, and in order to register with the regulating body, (so you can start work), it requires you to be ''a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or have authorization under the Immigration & Refugee Protection Act (Canada)''.

Would that last part make someone on a temporary work permit eligible to register? The profession is 'medical lab technologist' in Canada or biomedical scientist in the Uk.

What do you do in this situation?

Re: Regulated occupation

Well obviously the 1st is easy as a Canadian citizen you can apply for any job even if not living in Canada.
The 2nd is almost the same but cant apply for jobs where you must be a Canadian citizen such as the RCMP.
The 3rd is those authorized by means of a Temporary Work Permit. As long as you meet the qualifications for the job then you can apply for it bearing in mind a lot of employers will give preference to Canadian citizens or PRs.
The big stumbling block is having credentials from other countries recognized over here to do that job. Being a technician in the UK does not automatically mean you are qualified over here.
Have you checked with the Province you wish to go to or the employer if they will even consider you applying for those types of jobs?

Yes I have checked with the regulating body, which is why I am here lol.

The regulating body want me to submit my credentials for assessment, and sit an exam. But in order to do that they require me to be one of the three I listed earlier.

I was just unsure how to get PR or a temp work permit when they want me to be registered under the regulator in order to do the job, can you see the catch 22 here? lol

Thanks for replying.

Re: Regulated occupation

If you need to sit an examination of some sort in Canada for credentials to be assessed then you can do that by being admitted as a visitor. Sitting an exam is not considered work.
Being admitted as a visitor is authorization under IRPA.

This was decided some time ago by the Supreme Court of Canada when a British lawyer sued the Law Society of British Columbia. If you are so inclined, you can read all about it here: Andrews v. Law Society of British Columbia

https://www.google.ca/search?q=CSMLS...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Too many links to list them for you, but the google search reveals links to all the provincial and national accreditation requirements for medical laboratory technicians.

Main regulatory body: http://www.csmls.org/Certification/C...ess/IEMLT.aspx

As an example, http://www.cmltm.ca/international/re...-time-cost.htm has a section regarding costs to non-residents so one would assume you do not require to be one!

Hope that helps
