Re: Redseal Test in Electrical Contracting
Hi Gary,
we are still in the UK, but I took and passed the IP/TQ (red-seal electrical) exam in Vancouver in March this year. I sent off the application to challenge (their expression not mine) the exam along with proof of hours of experience etc. in late October. There was date to fill in when you would be available to sit the exam, we picked March to tie in with a research trip, so I presume it could have been taken earlier. I also studied using the code book and ESAT cd-rom available from www.csa.ca, but be aware the test is not just on their code (regulations), as well as also some electrical theory questions there were also some that could be best described as local health and safety. I got the impression that it would have been a much easier test to pass if you were actually out there working for a period of time before taking it. However it is a multiple-choice type paper and you are allowed the Code Book with you, much like the 16th edition test here. By the way, it is no way near being as difficult as the c&g2391 we do, now that is an exam. Also there is no practical part to the exam. Good Luck Mick |

Hi Gary
I'm an Electrician(industrial) in Calgary and have been here for a year. What i can tell you is that you will need to study for the Red seal exam, I was told that it is 50% trade knowledge and 50% code knowledge. You get marks deducted for wrong answers! and you only get 2 chances. I passed first time with 77%. The red seal allows you to work anywhere in Canada. Here in Calgary the average wage for an industrial electrician is $30 per hour, And yes there are loads of jobs. I'd be pleased to answer anymore questions you have. There is a web site from Edmonton, i think, that has similar exam questions for sale but i found the ESAT Appprentice package (Code book + CD Rom) from the CSA website the best study aid. Hope this helps. Simon Would you mind if I ask you how many question you had for red sal exam? I am industrial electrician too and I am moving to calgary next month,I just wondering a bout time and nomber of question and how fast I can do registeration for the exam as soon as I arive. Many thanks and best whishes |

I have done the 16th edition here, & have the joy of looking forward to the 2391 although Im kinda hoping I wont need to do this as Im loathed to invest anymore time and money into the system here. So this test that you have taken, "The Red Seal" as I understand it you can then work anywhere in Canada once having passed it! Do you know if its the same kind of test for Residential? Most of my experience is domestic here although i have done light commercial 3ph etc etc... Industrial estates etc.. Like you say it would be far easier to do if you could say have 6 months experience there, study, then sit the test as you would be far familiar with the terms used... Was there any questions on motors? etc.. Star delta stuff? As I cant remember any of that to be honest:) If there is does it advise you this in the training cd + Manual? Thanks for the link Mick. By the way when are you off? Red seal surely thats your ticket to go :) Cheers Gary |

Re: Redseal Test in Electrical Contracting
Hi
Just a few additions, I passed my second attempt on the BCIP/TQ and got the certificate. Some interesting info I found was althought the red seal is supposedly valid all over canada, I have met a few canadian electricians who moved to BC and had to take the BC IP/TQ before being allowed to work as an electrician. For me the IP/TQ was not easy, I have C&G 2361 Pt1&2, ONC electronics and HNC electrical/electronic. The three hour 120 question exam had me sweating, mainly on the local trade knowledge questions and local H&S questions, according to ITA Vancouver there is no limit on the number of times you take the exam, you just pay for each attempt (after the first two inclusive ones) and if a question is answered wrong, marks are not taken off the total marks. One question I recall that threw me was :- If a nema starter is replaced with an iec starter what type fuses do you fit. Most hiring here is thro the union office, this is another wait period, submitt your forms , wait for the committe to review your application, then if approved you go on a waiting list. Average pay rates here are about 30 - 36 $Cdn /Hr A good read of the CEC book Index helps and remembering that current flow is electron flow here not conventional i.e. LH & RH rule is reversed ( GM not MG ) and flow is negative to positive for any calculations Good luck Cheers Jerry |

Re: Redseal Test in Electrical Contracting
just been lurking on this thread and was wondering if anyone can help!!!
My HO is going out this year to sit exam, hes an industrial electrician and any help or copy of papers would be helpful. We are in the process of getting hse on market and sitting in rented, so when we have done the trip and job hunt, can go asap. did look at filing the paper work in for PR but decided against it until we get a job offer etc 4 years is a long time to wait, but willing to look at other areas. at the moment we are heading to ontario without this exam we dont stand a chance, but i have read that some have done with no reading etc, but any material would be helpful!!!! gill |

I also have this one too:) Also about have taken the 16th:) The nema starter part as lost me to be honest. I never could quite grasp the Motor side of things really, perhaps its because I always knew I would not come across this type of work! Mainly my work has been domestic more so than industrial. I too have hear dthis about Red seal that it is by Province more so than automatic right once you have it! However the agent we are using said if you take Red seal it covers you for all of Canada... Hmmm Conflicting info there... I have also heard of another qualification called "The Alberta certificate of competence" or something along those lines its supposed to be the equavalent of Red seal. Im dreading the whole prospect of the test to be honest:) I certainly admire anyone that has taken it and passed thats for sure :) Anyway thanks Jerry for your time and info, its well appreciated. I'll have to battle on with it :) Regards Gary |
Re: Redseal Test in Electrical Contracting
Hi Gary,
I have some stuff I will try to scan, It is a couple of sheets on canadian trade knowledge names, It helped me studying for the exam. I am always wary of agents, I did all the immigration paperwork myself. Good luck with it all. :) cheers Jerry |
