Well, we finally fly over 5 weeks on Tuesday, we don't feel remotely organized but i'm sure it's all good really!
We have been under the impression from the start that cats are not allowed to roam free. This is something we read in the Red Deer Bylaws and have been working around this ever since. However, we have sorted out a rental property and the realty lady seemed a little shocked when we asked about the possibility of cat enclosures. On further discussion she says that cats can roam as free as you want them to. I don't want to get my hopes up and therefore wondered if anyone in or around the area knows if this Bylaw is enforced or is it a bit like the Hackney Cabs having to carry a bail of straw in the boot?? Unless you have an indoor cat, how the heck do you stop a cat from wandering wherever it chooses to go. |

Pay attention to a realtor or the bylaws, a tough question to answer. I would go with the bylaws set by the city who can impose fines, rather than a realtor who has no legal authority in regard to bylaws at all.
Often bylaws are only enforced when someone complains and the pound picks up stray dogs or cats. Bylaws are for the benfit of the community as a whole, unfortunately some residents seem to think they only need obey the ones that suits them. The reactions to innocent questions on this forum never ceases to amaze me! I am actually not a retard and realize that a By Law is exactly what it says and probably should be adhered to. But the lady had not even heard of it and therefore I just wondered if it was a By Law that no longer stood and someone forgot retract (there are plenty of them here). I really should know by now that this forum is not about people getting help and more about people shooting you down in flames if you dare ask anything less than rocket science! Thank you to all helpful posts I shall take it on board . |

Re: Red Deer/Alberta Bylaws??
Just for information, our contractor who lives in Eastview and has a cat has just been fined for letting his cat roam - one of the neighbours complained.

Re: Red Deer/Alberta Bylaws??
It will all depend on your neighbours. I know without asking ours would not appreciate it one bit and would call by-law so we respect that and for now he is an indoor cat.
Maybe the realtor meant the car could roam your property - which they can. Though unless you have an older cat, a huge garden, and a cat that does not roam far... |
Re: Red Deer/Alberta Bylaws??
Thanks guys, she definitely meant roam the neighborhood because the conversation started with us asking if we could put up a cat enclosure in the garden (which she thought was very odd!!).
We had already accepted that they'd have to stay in until we get our own property (hopefully with a bit of land) so they don't affect anyone else so we'll carry on with that train of thought. It would have been nice for our older cat who hardly ever comes indoors in the summer to have free roam but hey ho not to worry at least i'll know where he is I suppose. That said if when I get there all the neighbors have cats who roam i'll shall take my chances with the sphincter police :p |

Better an unhappy cat than coyote food. |
