Re: Recent shipping quotes to share?
May I ask why it's necessary to ship your furniture?
Just buy new, it'll be far cheaper.
If it's antique stuff, I'd just ask a friend in the UK to look after it for you.

We would ship it if it cost twice the replacement value, as for starters we'd not be able to replace these goods to the same standard (Canadian prices for same type/quality of goods are extortionate compared to Europe, and some of it is niche/specialist stuff).

Same here, there's no way I'd leave what we're taking. We've really whittled it down to the good stuff. I can't imagine many friends would have space to have my antiques indefinitely - besides, if I did that, I'd have to pay tax on bringing it all in later, and that would cost more than the shipping quotes I'm getting now! I'd just be postponing the agony
Incidentally - has anyone had any luck giving unwanted items to charity? In previous moves we've given stuff in good knick to charities who help homeless people set up home, so we went through the phonebook and called again this time. We offered a brand new woolen rug, solid birch dining table, leather Ikea Poang chair and matching footstool, baby cradle, all of it decent quality and gently used - and, get this, none of these "christian" charities wanted the stuff "because the dining table doesn't have matching chairs". WHAT???? I really didn't know homeless people needed co-ordinating dining furniture. Must be for all the dinner parties they hold.
So, what we can't give we away we will put on the street with a "Free to good home" sticker. Won't last long around here. I'd like to have sold it all and at least donated the proceeds to charity but they'd probably only accept clean crips notes, no scruffy ones. Honestly....we were gobsmacked!!!

2 sofas, bed and bookcase cost £3000 alone and i`ve taken alot more than that. It worked out cheaper to ship some stuff than to start completely from scratch. Was glad to chuck out alot of stuff . I figured having some familiar stuff around would be a good thing, it may be a girl thing...

A charity that does take furniture and is worth contating is www.emmaus.org.uk. Its non denominational. They renovate goods (furniture, brown and white goods)and re sell to support themselves. they accept no funding from the government and pay their admin' ordinary wages (unlike many of the major NGO's). Pity about the previous dig concerning 'christian' charities' thought. Doubt if this comment would have been acceptable if it had been a muslim, hindu, or jewish charity - and rightly so! Sad to see such nonsense on this web site.

Re: Recent shipping quotes to share?
We're in the process of getting quotes for shipped boxes (too little of our own furniture at present to have enough to warrant a container or even part, I think!!) Britannia just quoted us £1,300 plus insurance to send 600 cubic metres of stuff to Calgary. I think that's with us packing it, so we're now looking it quotes for packing and shipping, as some family heirlooms will be coming over (and better their destruction be on the heads of Britannia than mine....)

Re: Recent shipping quotes to share?
We have moved house a few times and we have always packed our own stuff. We have been told by Brittania removals that we can't pack our own stuff to move to Calgary because they need to know exactly what is going into the container because of customs so they have to do the packing.
Even stuff that over the last couple of years I have put into loft and carefully listed and boxed up with the move to Canada in mind , they say they need to unpack and repack.
I noticed that a few of you mention packing your own stuff though, so is this just the removal firm trying to get a bit more money out of me??

Re: Recent shipping quotes to share?
[QUOTE=Biiiiink]Hi again,
We've started getting the usual companies around to give quotes and I've been horrified at the prices they've given... On a quick search it seems our prices differ greatly from ones in the semi-recent archive here too. Mr B now thinks it's "because you're a woman" the prices have been so high as it's me fielding the quoters when they come round. Not convinced by that one at all though!!
We moved recently from Herefordshire to Nova Scotia. From four quotes we chose GBLiners. We packed a lot of the goods ourselves and had a 40ft container quite full for GBP 3500. Insurance is a moot point. It mostly seems to cover declared value for total loss. As it was, we had no breakages at all, and we consider GBLiners a very good company. We did pressure wash all outdoor goods. This was inspected bythe Food Standards Agency of AG Can
who came to the house as the container was being unloaded. Well worth the effort as they can charge extra to clean goods they think are contaminated with soil etc. Also, Customs highlighted all boxs they thought contained food stuffs, so be careful what is packed. We did think at the time that with everything else to do with the move, we wanted the shipping to be handled by someone competant and reliable as there are a lot of other things to worry about.

We're going to be moving from Amsterdam to either Burlington or Toronto (ontario regardless) and plan on bringing our:
*bed (king size)
*bed mattress
*a dresser from IKEA
*a sofa-table from IKEA
*computer
*books
*clothes
*and 2 small leather chairs from IKEA.
Any idea as to how much space this will take? (we're going to leave the sofas, bookshelves, etc all behind - just the necessary stuff).
How much did you take? Is that why your price was so low? I'd love to pick your brain on this...

You do know that there is IKEA in Toronto, do you? You may want to verify if it is not worth rebuying the IKEA stuff over there, depending on the shipping costs.
BTW: I still laugh at your avatar every day, I am so proud of myself

I've been giving thought to the selling of items instead of shipping - it would save $$$$ - must discuss it with the man and see what he thinks... well, he is Dutch, always ready to NOT spend money - no, I lie, he spends it well.... he must be an American in disguise....

Re: Recent shipping quotes to share?
We've just paid £1354 for about 225 sq. ft. from Manchester to Ottawa, door-to-door. Insurance was about another £300.
This was the lowest quote, the highest being about £500 more expensive.
We used Robinsons (www.robinsons-intl.com) & they were great. They were at our flat all day, wrapped & packed everything. All I did was keep the brews coming.
