Re: reccie trip...return.

Hi Glam,

When I did a reccie to the BC interior 2 years ago, I also came back a bit disilusioned for the very reasons of costs you have found. We found Kelowna and even Vernon to be too expensive for the lifestyle we wanted. Kamloops and the much smaller Salmon Arm may have worked out as just about affordable for us, but we were looking to get away from stress, not create it.

We are now in Nova Scotia where costs (starting with property prices), car insurance etc all much cheaper, overall about half the cost (for us) of living than we estimated in the okanagan (and here we have a bigger house with land and a view of the ocean). My heart is still in the okanagan, (I always dreamed of living near mountains), but life here in Nova Scotia is good. Even spent a very enjoyable Friday at the local ski hill, which was much more fun than I expected it to be for a little hill - $49 for rentals and lift ticket for the day.

BC is very attractive, but the saying BC means Bring Cash certianly held true in the areas we investigated (even leaving Van out of the picture). Good luck, i hope you can find an area that works for you.

No one has done that. You disputed the idea that it's commonplace for people in Canada to be stuck for the money to pay bills related to their medical conditions. Now you say you deal with the "failure of the social net to catch those it is intended on catching" which I'd guess to be the same thing.

Do calm down. There's really no need to leap to conclusions and to become aggressive in defence of your erroneous conclusions, that's the kind of thing that makes us innocents nervous about being around the police.

If it is not the custom for people in BC to admit to hardship consequent upon medical bills then that seems odd, people are not better off in BC and the medical plan is not remarkably better than in the rest of Canada, but if they don't, they don't.

No, my comments were with respect to your dismissive comments that cops are out of touch with society's ills (>>>>in Vancouver and that the police are out of touch with the public they police). End of.

Yes I see many failings of the social net...be it MCCF, or Fraser Mental Health, etc....no one is suggesting that it is perfect here, but you are an alarmist in the extreme. Given my job I am at the blunt end of the stick more than I care to be and see society with all its failings firmly attached. The reality is that tv may portray cops as action figures, the reality is most of our working days consist of picking up the pieces. We are little more than society's janitors.

And as for it being common place with scores of paupers raising funds for wheel chairs.......bollocks

Moreover, it was you who had a dig knowing full well I am a copper, suggesting that since, in your opinon, i was out of touch with the state of all and sundry raising funds for medical costs, that I as a copper am indicative of all coppers. To that suggestion I take particular offence. Make you feel good to poke the bear through the bars??

Well, he's right. It's not commonplace here, which is part of Canada.

How do you know if you don't live here? Seriously. Is there even the tiniest possibility that maybe medical care in ON might be creating the issue people have there? I'm surprised you're struggling with this considering it's been acknowledged over and over again that the provinces run things differently.

Either that or we're a more self-reliant bunch over here (but I doubt it).

I have been in Ontario for some time and have never seen a campaign to raise money for medical expenses for individuals. I have been asked to help out a family who lost everything in a fire and they had no insurance - not the same, but the closest I have seen.

I see this on the news quite regularly. House gutted by fire, family doesn't have insurance, lost everything. Are these people idiots or something?
