To be honest, I've not been to either place for many years, but I did briefly consider taking a job in Aberdeen last year. In the end, we decided that working in Canada and living in Norfolk was a better option for us!

Inverness is a very nice town, great location for getting into the Highlands. Obviously smaller than Abedeen but without the crazy property price distortion that the oil industry has on Aberdeen.

Because they bought a pub/restaurant there and the locals (not in Aberdeen itself, but 5 miles outside) took umbrage that the pub was being run by Sassenachs. They torched my BIL's Jaguar, trashed the bar and generally made life untenable. A notion of introducing class cuisine in the restaurant was ill-founded it turns out, because the clientelle seemed to prefer deep fried Mars bars with chips and gravy.

Meaning what? BIL had moved right up the offshore drilling food chain to toolpusher and was then "promoted" to an onshore job which he didn't like. Being already wealthy the restaurant was their escape plan.

It turned out badly (see above) and they had to sell at a loss. BIL was forced to return to the oil business and continued to excel. He has been a consultant coordinating platform construction and delivery based out of Norway (although he lives in Northumberland) for several years since and is disturbingly rich.

He's also a really nice guy but he doesn't tolerate Aberdonians gladly.

Horribly so. :) I'll be seeing him at his daughter's wedding near Bath in about 3 weeks, then again in Normandy in early August. He brings mean bud.
