I am reminded of the old addage Cut Your Coat according to Your Cloth - I too can't quite understand the breast beating about $100K - I know lots of families who are earning considerably less, and have a decent lifestyle, in Canada. A couple of years ago, we had a year with zero income, and it was remarkable the savings we were able to make and the standard of lifestyle we could still achieve on sod all. But that's the same anywhere.
Couldn't agree more, live according to your means.

Current UK VAT rate is actually 20%, has been since early 2011. It's the 'emergency' rate, supposedly only temporary...

Most people always want more, and always have something in their lives that could be improved on. Health, finances, relationship, house size, penis size, etc
Either way, I'd not move to Canada for less than $100k. Moreso without a job

Interesting. How about this - if you made $100K in Canada but were offered a job in the UK for £50K would you move back? (you get to pick the cities)

Yes, I'm presently looking for an NGO post in Greece. I always try to keep two months salary in hand for a problem, and when the shit really hit our family fan, we did live for a year on a sixth of our normal income. Not easy, but it actually made me realise how much we had wasted on a regular basis. It was a hell of a wake up call and has continued to make us aware of what we spend, which is no bad thing.
