Quickest way to Canada???? ASAP
 

Hi everyone,

Ok here is the situation,.

Im in the UK right now with all categories on my licence with plenty of experience driving hgv's.

I have no commitments i.e house, wife, kids etc etc im ready as of now to just get up and go.

Im looking at working in Canada but i know it wont be easy im just looking for info on the first things i should do or if anyone can suggest anything.

Ready to move quickly on this one :-)

Hi Phil and welcome to the forum. :)

From what I can gather from others on this forum, if you have at least 3 years class 1 experience (whatever that means!) that you stand a very good chance of getting a Temporary Work Permit for Canada. You could be out there in 6-12 months on a TWP.

Edited to add: just a thought, don't know how old you are but if you're under 30 then you could be eligible to apply for Bunac which would give you a years open work permit to do any job anywhere in Canada. It would certainly get you there quicker and easier than a TWP, the only thing is that applications for non-students open in about a week so you'd need to get ready to apply pretty quickly! But then you can enter Canada from Feb 2009 onwards I believe.

They are extremely short of drivers here.

If you can buy your own rig and get a contract with a haulage company that pays you by the contract you're going to be better off than either being paid by the mile, or working for someone.

It is tough right now with fuel prices and a shrinking economy, but there are jobs, especially if you want to "hotshot" up to the oil fields etc.

They sort out the LMO (labour market opinion) and the TWP (temporary work permit)

First look at a truckers abroad website,there you will find which companies are taking on foreign drivers. Make calls to various companies, then you could possibly have a telephone interview.
As long as you don't have a criminal record you can gain your work permit on point of entry to Canada.

We had interviews in the UK back in September, but because my partner had a criminal record from when he was 16, we had to apply for the twp from London,which we are still waiting for, but it should be with us in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully we will be in Canada in January. Another driver who had the interview at the same time as us is already there.

Oohh, my cousin has just moved out to Lethbridge, her husband is working for H&R. They've been there three weeks and seem to be loving it!!
