Qualifications
 

Hi hope someone can help
looking to move to Canada and was wondering what (if anyone knows) what UK qualifications are transferred over to be useful for getting a job ...
i am currently doing my fdsc in public and environmental health
plus i also have a NVQ level 2 in health and social care..
my husband has got city and guilds level 3 in horticulture with about 8 to 9 years experience working in that field
he has got NVQ level 2 as chef
plus he is also looking to do his AAT level 3 in chattered accountants
are any of these realistically any good .. i know that the credentials system will be reopened May sometime
Any help would be great thank you .. i have also been on the CIC site

Please don't 'bump' your thread (re-read rule 13). For future ref, this part of the forum is only for visa related queries, so that may be why it wasn't responded to.

But bottom line is that none of your qualifications would really be recognised in Canada, most Canadians have no idea what an NVQ is. I don't know about the AAT, but I'll move this to the main Canada forum where somebody else may be able to help.

Have you read the Wiki article on equivalency of qualifications?

Hi, for accountancy the only qualifications that would be recognised are the ACCA and CIMA ones (dont know about ICAEW) as they then transfer to the Canadian equivalent. This is a country that likes its degrees, masters degrees and so on.

Yes it may sound sarcastic but true.
I went to Canada as a FSW in childcare & education as I worked in a school here as a teaching assistant thought that was enough to land me a half decent job (equivalent to TA) which bit did help as i got a job after 3mnths but in a daycare setting (which I didn't like) but had to start somewhere.
I then done voluntary work @ local school & went to college to do a bridging/refreshers course ECE (early childhood education) for 6mnths with work experience too but there was NO way around it!
The long & short you more than likely will have to do another course to say you have Canadian experience too lol

I did eventually get a job in a school setting as teacher in kindergarten and I love my job very much:D

Been in Canada for four years now in Otrtawa. From my experience qualifications and experience mean very little if anything. IT seems one area where skills are transferreable but everything else... Its like starting all over again with a new career. Doors do open with time but qualifications aren't really recognised.good luck

Some qualifications mean very little or nothing ( eg NVQ). A degree or MBA has impact here, whether its a Canadian one or a British one.
I think it depends what is required generally in your profession/field as that would differ.
In Accounting, to get a decent job here with a decent salary, you need a professional designation. I cant comment on requirements in other fields of work.

When I write "here", I am specifically referring to Nova Scotia. I am sure if thats not the case in other provinces, someone will comment

I have a SQV and here in NS it's recognised but that's for working for children unfortunately I have know many social workers to really struggle getting work in NS (can't commont on other provinces) they and people like nurses can't seem to have their qualifications transferable.. :(
