I had to set up a Yahoo.ca email address to send messages on Kijiji.

why am I finding such negativity on this expats site with craiglist, is it a legitimate site for property rentals

I think it differs by area. In some parts Kijiji is the main website for free classified. In Vancouver, for instance, Craig's list is dominant. A huge number of rentals are listed on there.

I am not aware of anyone being negative about Craig's list out here but a lot of us urge caution about signing up for a rental sight unseen for two reasons:

1) A place might look good in the photos. When you get here it might be on a busy and noisy street, the neighbors less than desirable, and there is slaughterhouse across the back lane.

2) There are some people who try to steal. They invent a property, or claim to be the landlord of someone's property and take your deposit and disappear.

Both things quite easy to suss out if are on the ground - very difficult from several thousand miles away.
