Problem with htc desire s in Canada?
 

this is an odd one. I brought my htc desire s phone with me to Canada, planning to just use it here because I thought it was unlocked. Unfortunately I didn't check this, and it seems it is locked because it doesn't like any sim card from here. So I took it to an unlocking place in the local mall, left it with them, they tried to unlock it and couldn't do it! The guy said it's the first phone he's not been able to unlock.
Anyone else had this problem? Do I have no choice but to buy another phone? I really liked my htc... :(

Your EU version might not be compatible with the frequencies used here so even if it's unlocked it might not be able to register on networks in Canada. (thus looking like it's locked when it actually isn't)

I have an HTC Desire S and it works fine with a Speakout card (7-11). I had read that there are two or three cards it will work with (as far as I remember, FIDO was the other one, can't remember the third). It's got something to do with the frequencies.
But I'm 100% sure that it was unlocked as it was from Carphonewarehouse and all of their phones are unlocked.

PS. The Speakout card doesn't work in Europe. I.e. I have no signal. Maybe I should have activated roaming or something.

My partner had the same Phone it worked with Chatr not too sure if you have them in the area? But it was an issue my blackberry was fine with others but not the HTC. It was around $40 monthly with Chatr for everything we wanted so a year later we re looked into it and with Fido we got a free Samsung , $40 per month for minutes, texts , internet and voicemail, contract was also for 2 yrs. Something to look into depending on coverage as sometimes it doesn't work out cheaper keeping your phone :)

I had the same phone. I had it unlocked before I arrived. I got it working but the 3G was not compatible. I ended up trading it in and getting a S3

I've done some rummaging online and it seems there are 2 versions, and the European version doesn't work here with 3G (and it seems therefore with nothing!). Am not impressed because I really like my phone :(
OH has a Samsung and I don't like it much... iPhones are too expensive, Htcs seem really rare here. Looks like I'll have to make do with a cheap phone for just now...

yer we really liked the HTC too and were hoping for a contract with one but they are rare. The Samsung isnt as nice but its just as cheap as a sim only so we thought may aswell
