Prince George

We are considering living in Prince George when we get our visas through.

Has anyone else gone there as we're not sure about the weather as certain websites say that it gets very cold!

I have spent a few weeks in PG over winter, it was not a nice experience. Why have you chosen PG?

We've been looking at house proces, employment etc and it seemed a good bet compared to Vancouver Island etc.

Erm.... it's a large industrial town that revolves around the natural resource industry (particularly forestry, pulp & paper). It's also located in the middle of nowhere. It offers a particular isolating lifestyle if that's what you're after. It's cheap for a reason.

And the forestry, pulp and paper industries are in a bad situation right now. And, yes, it can be very cold in winter. Prince George might suit you but it is not a destination that many expats head for. You really should visit first before deciding on PG as your destination.

Prince George is not a destination most Canadians head for by choice.

In comparison to Vancouver Island it's quite cold.

Where on Vancouver Island were you considering?

Mike1967 lives there ... he isn't on here much, so you may want to send him an e-mail.

Or Calgary.

So how close to Buttonville Airport are you?

About 4 km, west and a tiny bit north.

<I was slightly exaggerating, but not much ;)>

If those are you only reasons I would seriously consider somewhere less remote. Kamloops is a nice place.

It's a few years since I've been there, but my impression of PG is that it smells (making newsprint etc is a smelly process). It seems dark, hemmed in, out of the way, boring and dull.

It's on the highway to nowhere, but it's stuck in the layby!

If you're going to live there get a long term contract, 'cos it's industries are vulnerable. And get out as soon as possible for somewhere with some daylight.

I wouldn't put money down on a house there - prices are likely to fall.

Fishing and hunting in the area is great though.

Get used to plaid shirts, kodiak boots and pickups with gunracks!

Re: Prince George

Get up to PG very occasionally, but always on the way to somewhere else. Some wonderful scenery nearby, but more out toward Smithers. Limited opportunities for work though, does of course depend on what you want to do. Had thought about moving up that way to retire, but in reality not sure I could take being so far out and the extreme weather. PG would definatley not be somewhere I would want to live.

If you decide to give it a try, visit first, if you still want to try it, rent for a year and see how it goes.

Thanks everyone.

We do plan to travel around for a couple of months before settling anywhere so that should give us more of an idea.
