Primark equivalent in Canada

Hi all,

I’m new to the forum and new to Canada. I live in GTA. Was wondering if there was a clothing store in Canada like we had Primark in the UK. Thanks a ton.

Not a good direct comparison. Cheap clothes try Giant Tiger or CostCo. For modestly priced clothes for ladies, try Reitmans.

I’d say Old Navy. Though I haven’t shopped in the others mentioned. Old Navy is like primark in that the clothes are cheap and cheerful and don’t last very long and the shops are permanently messy. Hahaha

Def not a direct comparison lol. Cost-co to be fair isn’t bad for quality as it’s named brands

I agree with Old Navy although I find their clothes last awhile.

Do not go to Ardenes, who do have cheap clothing but it’s generally very bad quality. They also have a terrible return policy where you can only exchange within 14 days of purchase

Just also thought- Walmart’s clothing brand George I guess is pretty close- cheap- same quality stuff- and I know you can also get George stuff in the U.K.

In terms of affordable clothing- there’s also H&M in Canada- I find their stuff a bit cheaper here but I’m pretty sure that’s just because I live in Alberta so tax is 5%- so I felt like it was a 15% discount on what I’d pay in the U.K. haha

I don’t think there’s a direct comparison though- I certainly haven’t found one in Calgary- I think if there was it would be very popular.

Hello and welcome to BE! :welcome:

Walmart, Old Navy, Ardene when they have a sale on, Joe Fresh (you can also find them in Fortinos) or online; there are also lots of independent stores who are heavily discounted (if you are ever in Hamilton go to Jackson Square - lots of smaller stores there that have heavily discounted clothes - $47 tops for $15... and places like Marshalls and Winners have some good stuff sometimes.. Walmart, Old Navy, Ardene and Joe Fresh have a wider choice online than in store. Other online options - JC Penney https://www.jcpenney.com/ (US company but free shipping to Canada) Marks n sparks https://www.marksandspencer.com/ca/

Get Joe Fresh in Real Canadian or Loblaws supermarkets.

Of course there is also Winners and Marshalls, but these are more like TK Maxx than Primark.

Honestly in terms of cost, there isn’t anything like Primark out here.

I get a lot of clothes from Hollister and A&F when they have 60-70% off. Usually the clothes are pretty pricey to start with but after the discount it’s actually cheaper then Primark lol

I just paid $CAD4 each for perfectly good T-shirts in Giant Tiger. Great for day to day use.

Giant Tiger is one chain I wish would come to Vancouver, I did so much shopping there when I lived in Ontario.

In the obituary for the boss of Primark it explained that he started the company with funding, and shares held, by the Weston family. That is, the owners of Loblaws and related stores started Primark. I think we can be sure that, if there was money to be made from a Primark type chain in Canada, there would be such a chain in Canada. I guess Joe Fresh is as close as they're willing to go.

In my opinion Joe Fresh is absolutely awful, expensive considering the terrible quality and thin material. Walmart is a mixed bag, good for cheap work clothes.

Old Navy and CostCo are good bets as others have said, American Eagle is pretty good too for Jeans and have a good online store with frequent sales. I highly recommend checking out outlet malls for good deals on clothes as well, particularly ones located in the US if you live close enough to the border. I’ve got some great deals at Seattle Premium Outlets, particularly on shoes!

Another vote for Giant Tiger = Primark

Other than The Bay being like John Lewis (I hear cries of horror!) or Sears being like Debenhams, I can't think of a more alike comparison when it comes to clothing and bedding.

Perhaps because GT also does food and household tat, it gets dismissed for clothing (plus it's not all over Canada), but I find the similarities uncanny.

Even to the point that a few years ago both places were not especially pleasant places to shop - inaccessible clothing racks, scruffy, not well laid out etc and now they both are.

Is GT not allowed in BC?
