Bloody hell it's expensive though for such a small amount. *makes mental note to offer tree surgeons tea and cake next time they bring us more wood*

Sounds like a teepee and a campfire would be the only solution!!!

I just wonder because for 9 months I stayed with my in laws in a 6 unit apartment building in Montreal. I realise it's not the same but I was there for a whole winter and we never had the apartment baseboard heating on at all.

There must have been some communal area heating that was enough or maybe underfloor heating that wasn't billed to the in laws.
I don't think there is. We also rarely have the heating on and my suspicion is that our neighbours must use a lot of it and it just heats us too.

You owe them more than tea and cake. That 'small amount' is worth £200-500!

We're in the boonies in Central AB. We have a 4 bed house but we do have a stock waterer that needs to be constantly heated in the winter, and as we are on well water then although you don't pay for water you add more on electric for the pump. Installed a programmable thermostat last year wich has saved us around $30 a month on the gas.
For a 1050 sq ft 4 bedroom split level home in Calgary built 1971, certainly not insulated to today's standards. High efficiency furnace (94% efficient). Winter, thermostat set to 68°F during the day and 62°F at night, summer A/C set to 70°F during the day, off at night.

Average annual bill for all utilities, this includes electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, recycling, and waste management (garbage pickup) $2800.

Broken down on an annual basis:
Electricity: $80 per month
Natural gas: $85 per month
Water: $40 per month
Sewer: $34 per month
Recycling Fee: $8
Waste Management: $4.50

Winter months:
Electricity: $80 per month
Natural gas: $100 per month
Water: $26 (We use more water in the summer on the lawns and garden.)
Sewer: $26
Recycling and waste management same year round.

Anyway, just wondering how this compares to the bills over there. We are aiming to go to Nova Scotia and I know people often say that heating etc is expensive in Canada. Just interested in how it compares.

Thanks in advance for responding. Just off to put another jumper on now
$600 per month gas and elec combined

You wood think people would finally twig it if you were leafing out half their timber, wouldn't you? Have you thought about branching out into that line of business yourself?

Wood is free just the cost of a chainsaw and a little fuel then have a family day out in the bush.

Hydro monthly on equal billing over 12 months $145 per month

Oil was $160 per month over 10 months.

Changed to propane for heating - much cheaper- looks like we will be down to $800 for the year.New high efficiency furnace.

Wood 2 full bush cords $350

House is 1900 sq ft-built 1992
