People seem to like torturing themselves with "what ifs" for some reason. I never liked the things people claim to miss, e.g. soccer and curry. And the TV here is miles better imo. One day I'll figure out a latency based IP blocker, sell it to the BBC and force you all to watch Canadian TV. "Oh I can't get Radio 1 on Sirius XM anymore" Thank God for that. Really is CBC Radio 1 any worse than BBC Radio 4?

I suppose I would miss certain British foods if I couldn't get them in Loblaw's and various other places in Calgary. But I can get them easily, so meh. Years ago I used to say the banking system in the UK was better, but given the total disaster there and the limited damage in Canada I can't really argue that one anymore.

My only reason for posting is that I do think people look back with rose-tinted glasses.

I'm going back to England to visit at the end of June, it'll be interesting to go back after 4 years or so, and compare the two countries. I enjoy living in Canada, and based on what England was like when I left, I do prefer it on the whole. That being said I'm not sure what I like is just Canada per say, but just the pacific northwest of North America. It's a very cool place to be, I love being near Seattle and the other West-Coast cities.

I like both countries, but I can't see what Canada could offer us that the UK can't, so for now I think we're staying put.

Yay another one!! The Walnut Tree was an awesome pub, we got drunk there on numerous occasions prior to having the kids. Years ago they did this drink by the jug, we had no idea what was in it but it was bright pink and called Pink Drink, tasted lovely and got you hammered real quick. Then off to the Waterfront for some Mosh pit fun........Happy days. Did you work in the Beefeater on Cromer Road?? I got a slug in my food there once and haven't been back since lol. Pedro's Enchiladas were amazing!!

It's an almost pointless debate. You can find people who prefer living in Canada, others who prefer living in the UK and yet others who could live in either (or neither).

Everything is so subjective and depends on individual experiences and aspirations. People who move out of a bad situation in the UK and arrive into a better situation in Canada are more likely to prefer Canada - and vice versa. The move works out for some and not for others. Also much depends on the philosophy and attitude of the individual involved - someone might easily handle the bumps in the road and someone else might wilt (and there's a whole range in between).

Both countries have their pros and cons....and that list differs from person to person depending on what they value most in life. There are happy/sad, rich/poor, employed/unemployed, healthy/unhealthy, etc. people in both countries and you'll get wildly different views depending on who you talk to.

But if someone is happy in the UK, they shouldn't snipe at someone else who is happy in Canada...and vice versa. To each their own.

Although I agree with your summation, I don't think its a pointless debate at all. Hearing the views, experiences, insights, prejudices, naivete of others does help re-define your own perspective and remind you of aspects of each country that are sometimes forgotten or overlooked.

Sharing experiences is one thing but the pointless "my country is better than your country" crap is just childish and a waste of time. In global terms and for most people, both countries are quite close in terms of lifestyle, education, healthcare, etc. Do people really have such a hard time understanding why someone can quite easily move from one country to the other and be happy?

Fair enough. But why do you feel the need to go an live in someone else's country?

Huh? Isn't that what we all did or are thinking of doing? I live in the US now but I've still lived in either the UK and Canada for most of my life and I still frequently travel to both. Am I not allowed to offer my experiences or opinions?
